Has Winky Wright Retired? Future HOF Candidate?

Yes he gets in, why not. He has some very solid wins.

 

I agree and i thought De la hoya beat Trinidad in their fight. But still you can't ignored that Wright beat Mosley twice in a row. And Wright imo clearly beat a way way better version of Vargas even though it's not official in which Wright got robbed.

 

Why would I? Im a fan of both lol. It's not debatable that Wright "fought" a better Vargas. I haven't scored the fight yet so I can't give opinion on who I thought won especially since I haven't seen it in years.

 

fact is vargas would have won that fight if it weren't for low blows. imo i guarantee vargas would be a top 50 all time fight and the 154 pound all time if he won that tito fight and went on to all the great things he was capable of

 

Possible but we'll never know. Vargas was more competitive than people remember he was in that fight but that war toke alot out of him.

 

i guess you're right: like taylor/chavez even if he won, maybe he still lost. but the vargas that came into the ring that night is the greatest 154 pounder i've ever seen. like toney at 168, that was his one defining performance and tito had to resort to low blows to win

 

At the end of the day Tito still won. It's a shame he gave Vargas a vasectomy but hey, he still won. Vargas wasn't managed right but that was the best time he could've fought Trinidad...

 

true enough:good like you said vargas wasn't managed right. another 10 fights under his belt, get him to that stage more slowly. and with a referee who wasn't don king bought 'cough cough' influenced...who knows. but vargas lost, fair is "fair"

 

Yeah lol. I wouldn't say "fair" but would rather say "opportunist". As much as I love Tito he had a bad rep for lowblows.

 

I wouldn't consider Wright a first-ballot lock at all, but he'll probably find his way in eventually. I'm not sure if he's retired, but you can stick a fork in him even if he plans on coming back. He hasn't had a win since 06.

 

Winky dominated Shane twice with ease, doesn't that count for anything?

Throw in his complete masterclass vs Tito, the fact that he should have been the man to take Taylor's zero but got screwed, the fact that he should have been the man to take Vargas's zero but got screwed, and you have a stronger resume than Mosley's. I suppose it depends on how you scored the Wright-Taylor and Wright-Vargas fights.

 

Winky is definitely HOF worthy IMO.

I think he got jobbed in a couple of key fights that would have bolstered his resume.

The Vasquez fight was interesting. Winky was able to outbox Vasquez as long as he was able to stay on his feet and not get outmuscled. He just wasn't ready at that time.

Also interesting is the fact most people believed Winky was weak because he didn't have much power but he was able to outmuscle Shane, Taylor, and most other guys late in his career.

 

Boxrec automatically pulls guys from the rankings when they haven't fought for a year.

He's not retired officially, but I don't know if he'll fight again. I bumped into him in St. Pete about 4 or 5 months back and he was pretty cryptic about the whole thing.

I think he's probably a hall of famer, but not an upper tier one.
