they get it, they're just in denial. First time in history HW boxing become a global sport, they're favorite fighters get trashed and all of a sudden the division is garbage, not like the good old days when boxing was pretty much a local sport.
A few years after he retires he will be missed... much like Lewis is now. He's been dominate for over 8 years now. He showed his toughness and ability to adjust in the Williamson and Peter I fight. I think he peaked around Byrd II and is still there. During this time he has gone 17-0 (13) overall and 14-0 (12) in HW World Title Fights. In these 17 fights he has beat- D. Williamson WTD5 E. Castillo KO4 S. Peter W12 C. Byrd KO7 (he had beat him (W12) 5 1/2 years earlier) C. Brock KO7 R. Austin KO2 L. Brewster KO6 (avenging an earlier loss) S. Ibragimov W12 T. Thompson KO11 H. Rahman KO7 R. Chagaev KO9 E. Chambers KO12 D. Haye W12 S. Peter KO10 J. Mormeck KO4 T. Thompson KO6 M. Wach W12
Goodness, the last time a great heavyweight shared a ring with another was Holyfield vs Bowe exactly 20 years ago this month! I think the next closest great matchups that came after that were Holyfield-Tyson and Lewis vs Vitali. Lennox snubbed the chance of offering the public a real Heavyweight Superfight when he said "no thankyou" to a Vitali rematch. As far as the Klitchko bros. are concerned, their competition has'nt been any better or worse than Lennox Lewis' was during his reign at the top.
You're confusing entertaining toe-to-toe brawling with technically great boxing. Big difference :deal By your definition Ward & Gatti deserve a spot in ATG lists. They do not.
I'm not one for advocating lower standards, but I think people are being way too picky with who they consider "elite." A fighter who's Ring rated top five is elite in my view, regardless of how weak you think the era is. Wlad's consistently fought consensus top five guys throughout his title reign, and left no doubt in anyone's mind who was the greater man. Whether you think such fighters would have been champions in another era, or bums, the fact that he's beating them so easily has to count for something in his favour. Even the best fighters have an off day sometimes, and it's to Wlad's credit that he's left us with no questions in the manner in which he's been victorious.
Did Larry Holmes ever beat an elite in his prime? NOPE. Yet he's considered an ATG. Lennox beat a total of one elite in his prime, Vitali, and by cuts (although he was getting better in the fight and it was the worst shape he had ever been in and at his oldest, I give him that). He's also considered an ATG. Correction: Lennox also beat Tua, who was elite imo. Was he in his prime though? Must have been close enough to it, so it counts.
"you need to beat an ATG in prime form to become ATG" only applies to Klitschkos and not to other HWs. It's called Britardation.
Well if we use Klit logic, him losing to ATG Mike Tyson makes him an ATG ... just like Vitali losing to ATG Lewis makes him an ATG Holmes beat some HOFers but not an ATG in his prime.
No! The last time elite Heavyweights in their prime competed against one another was Holyfield-Bowe! Both elite heavyweights in the prime of their boxing prime!!!!:deal How dare you parrallel Ward-Gatti, to Holyfield-Bowe! :barf Neither Ward or Gatti are anywhere close to sniffing distance to the boxing skill and class of either Holyfield or Bowe! bbb
Tua was an elite heavyweight? Tua, the heavyweight who never held a world title in a weak era of multi belts being passed around? Tua? The heavyweight who froze and made a silent pact in ring with Lennox Lewis, refusing to exchange punches? Sorry buddy! At one point Tua was a force in the heavyweight divsion, but that all came to an end the night Ike Ibeabuchi reached into his heart and snatched his fighting spirit! Tua was nowhere near elite when Lewis waltzed with him.
