Groves is a very tough, skilful normal sized opponent, Len.

That's a fast response Moog, are you following me. ..:) :)

Now for a dose of reality Moog old pal:

..what you say is ...yes. true.. .....and because size is so important in boxing, (that's why we have weight classes, remember) ... sometimes .... Quite often actually, a fairly mediocre big un (like Callum) will beat a good small (or just normal sized) un. Because he is bigger, BIGGER Not necessarily better. As per your new super-sized wooden hero, the 4-punch a round stiff upright, zero head movement plodder callum Smith , aka The Plank.

Not quite 20. You only got one out of three right. :) Groves has never got up to win, or clawed his way back in a fight hewas losing. So heisnt particularly tough. He isn't particularly normal sizedeither. .he is bigger than normal for 168,. He IS indeed skillful.. .he is used to controlling shorter smaller men at range... He is very skillful at it actually.. But this failed miserably against the super-sized monster Callum Smith.

Groves fought The wrong fight. His usual long range fencing is not the way to beat callum. The tactics that always worked against his usual type of opponent failed against callum...not because callum is particularly good though. .. He's just particularly big!

    Some good points.

I’d make a distinction between Smith being one-paced and being a good finisher. He’s clearly the latter; when he gets a guy hurt he turns it on while still picking his punches.

At elite level though it’s important to have the ability to win rounds by the right punches at the right time, in order to catch the judges eye. I think that’s where he could get caught out if he fights someone who out hustles him while being able to stand up to his power.

With Smith’s attributes there probably aren’t too many at 168 who could do that to be fair.

Regarding Groves’ size, he looked massive against Murray and is generally considered big at 168.

Smith is just huge at the weight, like Jarrett Hurd. Some guys are just physical freaks.

To be fair you have been banging the drum about him for a while. - you were right.

I thought he had stagnated but like with Fielding fight seems to rise to the occasion

Climbed back up off the canvas against Jack and was v unlucky to lose a SD in the end. Should have got the win imo. Absolutely sparked cold against Froch but he still scrambled to his feet desperate to carry on.
He also showed toughness when he dislocated his shoulder against a hungry, dangerous fighter in Junior. The sight of his left arm completely limp as he was still smashing Junior with right hands was the sign of a real, tough champ.

We’re going to have to agree to disagree mate.

No need to disagree.. .id forgit about the jack fight. You're right. Whatever was I thinking there. .. In any case just by being world level in boxing it's impossible for him not to be tough!

Not taking anything away from Smith as he did a job on Groves. I do think Groves has lost something big somewhere since the CEJ fight. His shoulder, his heart or his will. He did not look quite right in the ring that night. May I also add it was NOT something CEJ took from him in their fight. Like I say props to Smith. Think with his size and potential he could be a good if not great SMW

I decided to follow you actually Len as when yiur in troll mode you give me a good laugh. Grives weight in more than Smith, bet the weighed similar in ring. I have been a big Smith fan for years, so nothing new in it. Wouldn't say he is my hero though lol. Hopefully Frampton will get to the level Smith is at, no it would make your year. Out of interest as i dont know tbe answer Len, has Ireland ever had a fighter who was Ring Magazine Champion?

It's funny many posters who said Smith had no or little chance against Groves are now saying it's only because he is so much bigger lol. He was as big prior to the fight as he was in the fight !! Does that mean Groves victories over Murray, Chudinov and Eubank are deminshed because he was bigger ? (though they were all fighting at 12st).

Nice one Moog. Very classy of you to take my slagging in a spirit of good sportsmanship ...they'll be plenty more to come as I trigger snowflakes all over the place. :) .
Short answer I don't know. Frampton was ring Mag "fighter of the year" I think..but wait he " ring champ"??? . And possibly Jimmy mclarnin might have been." ring Mag champ" years ago... Haven't time to investigate further for u tonight, sorry.. Maybe try googling it... Cheers pal.
