Just read it on B-Scene. It says Montel has to fight his mandatory Eric Morel next or be stripped of his title.
Doesn't matter, Japan sanctionning body does not recognize the WBO. So Montiel can still win the WBC strap.
I think it's kinda stupid, can't he just pay Morel some step aside money and Morel can fight the winner for 2 titles?
Heres the story: I'm not exactly sure what the story is in Japan. Last week there were multiple reports in the Japanese press that that Hozumi Hasegawa would fight Fernando Montel in a Bantamweight Unification on April 30 in Japan. On Monday there was an actual press conference in Japan where Teiken Promotions announced the fight was close to a deal. On Monday night B-scene.com spoke with multiple individuals involved with Top Rank and Zanfer, who co-promote Montel. Everyone of them denied the press clippings in Japan. Montel, bound by an agreement with the WBO, must fight Interim Champion Eric Morel next. The original plan was to place Montel/Morel in the co-feature slot on the May 8th Latin Fury PPV being headlined by Antonio Margrito. Recent talk has the fight landing on the Cotto/Foreman undercard at Yankee Statium in New York.
this is where promoters and the ABCs presidents get in the way of good fights happening they're a detriment to boxing instead of helping to get the sport in its rightfully place :hat
Montiel-Morel is a good fight but Hasegawa-Montiel is much much better. Hope it will push through April 30 in Japan. Nishioka vs. Bangoyan for the WBC super bantam belt is one of the undercards.
An internationally meaningful showdown between a Japanese fighter who is making noise for P4P consideration and a B+ Mexican fighter? Pssh, not in this game.
i too was kind of surprised that Arum was willing to put one of his fighters in against a fighter of another promotional outfit without any major benefit. But true to his game, Arum backed out.
"Montel, bound by an agreement with the WBO, must fight Interim Champion Eric Morel next." The WBO is forcing the Mandatory fight with Morel before Montel can fight Hasegawa. It's the WBO's fault, not Arum's.
The WBO belt wouldn't even be on the line if I'm correct since Japanese boxing doesn't recognize it and Hozumi wouldn't keep it, so it might not be an issue at all.
True, if Hasegawa wins the title will be useless but if Montel wins he will get 2 titles. So basicly it's a unification match only for Montel.
Actually I got a question about that, so if Hasegawa does win and get the WBO title does it get stripped immediately or would he just not be able to defend it in Japan?
