''I can't say nothing disrespectful about Mr Marciano. I think it would probaly end in a no conest or a draw or something. I really would find it extremely disrepectful to say I would win, plus I think it's really unfair to him because he was a small Heavyweight fighting in a different era'' ''Hasim Rahman''(1999)
In other words 'if he was roiding like I am he would probably knock me out, but I'd knock him out if he was unchanged'
I seem to recall the Rock getting damn near KTFO (and officially so, briefly) by a former middleweight not too long ago...:think
Plenty of greats, not lacking in self confidence, have the perspective and class to say "I would definitely unequivocally lose to XYZ (fellow great/s)"
Am I in the minority when I say I think Rahman, although he became champ, could & possibly should have achieved even more had he taken care of himself better? He has fought some fights in terrible shape.
Rahman rarely put it all together at top level. His ring generalship was lacking, as was, as you point out, his focus. But he was a big, athletic (to some extent) and talented, with underrated power. Not sure it would be disrespectful for him to say he felt he would beat Marciano. Me? The best Rahman....I wouldn't dismiss the chance he could win, but nor would I bank on the outcome, one way or another period.
Then plenty of greats are public liars. I'm not overly impressed by false modesty. I'd rather have a world class fighter tell me his strategy for victory, and spare me the respectful lie.
I guess you got a good dose of strategy from Rahman. You make it sound like it's strategy for an upcoming fight. Who gives strategy of hypothetical fights with past champions?
