In an age when the heavyweight division has no Americans of notice, Floyd Mayweather Jr. is primarily responsible for introducing the average sports fan to boxing. His personality and appearances on shows such as Leno and Dancing with the Stars helped gain the interest of people who would otherwise pay no mind to boxing.

Floyd, Oscar, Pacquiao and HBO are all doing a great job for boxing. Not only in America but worldwide.

In terms of fighters, Oscar and Floyd are keeping boxing in the spotlight.

But Pacquiao? The average sports fan doesn't give a **** about Pacquiao. They probably don't even know who he is.

Yea then once he gets them to watch one of his fights he turns them away from boxing forever. Its the exact thing that happened to one of my friends. I used to tell him to watch boxing but he said nah its not exciting enough and all that ****. Of course he rented the DLH fight because of the hype when i remember telling him if you think boxing is boring dont rent that fight rent the Cotto-Judah fight that you will like. He ended up going with Floyd-Oscar and guess what he has not watched boxing ever again

If he woulda watched the Cotto fight he would have been more inclined to watch boxing. So yea your argument is not very solid. If a guy who had never had interest in boxing and he ends up watching a Mayweather fight its almost a guarantee that he will never watch boxing again.

What Mayweather does really well is sell the whole heel vs. face, wrestling angle. Basically, him being a dick on HBO helps Hatton get over with the rubes with his whole "man of the people, I hang out and throw darts" gimmick.

Pacquiao does amazing in PPV numbers and keeps the casual fans coming back for more with his exciting style.

Add Hatton and Calzaghe to the list of people helping bring boxing back.

    and Cotto.

The thread is a little narrow in focus. Pac has done great things to popularize the sport in Asia, likewise Hatton in England, Cotto in Puerto Rico, Barrera/Morales in Mexico, etc. Floyd and Oscar are barely purely responsible for keeping the sport alive, and certainly, promoters who have made big fights happen deserve credit for making big fights happen this year. This, as much as anything, is keeping boxing on the map.

I actually heard an advertisement for the PPV of this fight on the radio the other day. I NEVER see advertisements for boxing on the normal TV or radio stations down here. That is saying something in itself that the fight is reaching out to the general non boxing population. After Dancing with the Stars and his DLH fight, people that dont care about boxing now know who PBF is and that is a good thing for the sport.

Atleast when the casual ESPN crowd watches the fight they will see two of the top guys in their prime instead of another fight of old Tyson getting KTFO by a club fighter again.

This year has been a great year for boxing one of the best i can remember in my 22 years around. we've had upsets, wars, and exhibition of perfect counter shots. i watch UFC when i'm bored or just channel surfing but boxing i sit at the edge of my chair for hyped like 15 y/o about to get his first lay. Good on Floyd and oscar for bringing the light back and the others for making it exciting.

Good year and its not over yet. I hope 2008 can get near this year.
