It was 25 years ago!!! atsch Sad to say, they're still selling fights with racial angles - maybe not as blatantly, but it's still there. I don't think this fight will approach Holmes-Cooney in that regard. Take it from someone who followed the build-up to that fight closely, there is no fight where the racial angle has been overplayed even CLOSE to that.
Arum is always trying to interject race into promotions. It's fing stupid--this isn't 1920 anymore. I don't know anyone who would by a ticket or ppv simply because it's a white guy and a black guy fighting. Lame.
well if someone brought it up then it must be on someones mind. This isnt a perfect world and people do shady sh*t to make a buck, we all see it every day. My thing is, is this really shady??? Its really no different the what the Olympics are base on, or world cup soccer. It for some reason have become taboo to show pride in your race, I see nothing wrong with that. The problem cames when people feel they have to disrespect other races or bring harm to them in order to feel good about thier own.
25 years isnt that long ago my friend, and the only reason that we have not seen anything like that is because we have seen a White american fighter reach the Heights that Cooney reached since Cooney. Mesi was getting close, and look at all the hoopla that followed a guy that did NOTHING in the world of boxing.
Pavliks will have to stop Taylor to win, the judges will already have their cards filled out before the fight begins. Hopkins beat Taylor, yet he was cheated. Winky was cheated also.
Tommy Morrison got some props, but I honestly believe the pushes they got were because they were exciting fighters, not because they were "white hopes". If either of them were black or mexican and fought the exact same way, putting together the exact same body of work, I really don't think things would've been different for either. People want to see KO artists, and if they can get knocked out themselves, all the better. That's what matters. Times have changed. That said, at least this won't be a race war like Taylor vs Spinks was- I wasn't sure who was going to win that race, the boxing match or my pillow. It turns out it was Pillow TKO9 Taylor-Spinks.
well UNFORTUNATELY! we know that there are still certain people who thinks that way and it doesnt help fueling that hatred by participating or even making a big deal out of it. and i understand we're not talking about the other races, just B & W. The world is already at a stage where races doesnt matter as much anymore, and whenever there is, its for national pride and thats it, not too much about being a better race...
Racism, patriotism and all the other ISM's still exist. Ideally EVERYONE is equal but I doubt that will ever be fully in effect because that is perfection and perfection doesn't really exist. So yes, there are going to be some siding based on race.
I wouldn't say Alabama is much different than anywhere else I've been. That said, I think this is more regional than racial, although that does sometimes come into play. Many white fans I know from the South have been ready to embrace Taylor BECAUSE he is from the South. However, he has never seemed to become what he should be. He doesn't seem to listen to Steward well in the corner. Pavlik is going to knock him out.
Undisputed Middleweight championd, 2-0-1 in fights with current p4p fighters and all-time greats, damn I hate to see what one would have to do to BECOME WHAT HE SHOULD BE.
I communicated my point poorly. He hasn't looked as good in the last couple of fights as he did in the first fight with Hopkins, and seems more beatable now than at any time in the past few years. Winky gave the last fight away. Taylor seems to have plateaued, and I personally thought he would keep improving.
