TFFP, why is it your man Kessler won't move up to fight Dawson with his handlers citing weight as the reason?
Because his handlers are a bunch of cocks? What were you expecting, a double standard from me just because one of my fighters is involved? :yep I've been fairly consistent that I've never been a believer in a few lbs making a world of difference. All these ****in weights are just a way to make money for corrupt organisations. All these guys are welterweights in the old days.
We're talking 50 years ago though, of the weights introduced from the 40s onwards I'd say the ones 10st and over were especially justifed.
Big weight differences of course. I'm just not seeing 5lbs here and there. Skills pay the bills, easily accounting for that unless we have two completely evenly matched fighters. I don't see a huge difference in siz between Huggy Hatton and Pacquiao. Or Kessler and Dawson. Who wins, Hopkins or Adamek?
Because Hopkins may possibly be fighting Adamek, I think the Pole, come US resident, is being built up even more then he already was. Admittedly I haven't seen a huge amount of him (I need to see more), but I'm not sure that he justifies all this hype.
I'm not sure how much hype he's getting. Anyway, he's doing his job by fighting and beating good contenders at his weight. However it will be another of example, skills > weight*where weight jump is not unreasonable. Hopkins-Adamek is close to an unreasonable jump in weight for a pensioner, however its Hopkins, and the styles favour him completely.
Adamek. Size is big factor in a lot of fights (not all, but a lot), the fighters don't have to be anywhere near completely evenly matched for it to become a factor. "A good big 'un will beat a good little 'un" is one of boxings oldest adages. You can always find exceptions to that but thats what they are, exceptions. Pac has proven very little at any weight above 130, he's done very well to get from Fly to Superfeatherweight but until he beats a decent lightweight or light welterweight that as far as he's legitimately got in my book. In the 'old days' they wern't allowed to cherry pick their oppponents as much as todays fighters when they moved up in weight, subsequently they came unstuck more often (hence the adage and the percieved need for "extra" weight divisions I guess).
i gave hatton a chance against floyd. but i made the mistake of going on recent mayweather performances. where he's boxed cautiously and not taken chances. i thought hatton had a chance against floyd in that kinda fight. of course the fight never turned out like that. :-( mayweather stood his ground and punched it out with hatton.
I just don't agree. The best fighters of this era have not encountered huge problems moving up in weight by a few lbs. They have always succeeded. Perhaps there is a ceiling at which they can no longer compete, as with Oscar at 160lbs. Hopkins, Mayweather, Oscar, Pacquiao, Mosley, Marquez, Toney, Jones...anybody you want to think about has had great success. It's a matter of being well rounded, because ultimately, there are attributes that come before strength and more importantly have to be used to make strength count.
TFFP "I just don't agree. The best fighters of this era have not encountered huge problems moving up in weight by a few lbs. They have always succeeded. This content is protected ..." For a a start a Hollywood weight drained, done, Tarver is the only guy Hopkins has ever beat from outside his career weight or below. Tarver looked good against Woods to be fair, but hopless again v Dawson. Anyway... Cotto... Hagler... Monzon... etc... non movers...
I included fighters from this era. And since when is Cotto a great fighter? But as it happens, he has been very good at two weights so far in an unfinished career. Yeah, I'm real sure Hagler would have had massive problems had he put on a whole 8lbs and taken on such greats as Carl Froch, Lucian Bute and Mikkel Kessler as the division stands today. Hagler was extremely versatile and would have had zero problems had this been an option. Likewise Monzon. Besides, I never said its a prerequisite for greatness. I said well rounded fighters should be able to do it without any problems, and it certainly can help if you have performed successfully at different weights. It doesn't hinder your chances of greatness that is for sure.
Thats partly because fighters moxing up today have 4 belts they can aim for, they skip through a division fighting maybe one hand picked box office name (rather than the tougest fighters) and proclaim that division "conquered". Being a good, vesatile fighter is certainly a massive advtantage when moving up in weights but just because a fighter doesn't or can't transfer his skills to a higher weight class that doesn't mean he isn't a good fighter. Off the top of my head, great fighters like Curry, Foster, Napoles and Gomez couldn't do it, while other greats like Hagler simply didn't bother because they knew they didn't have the frame/ build. The guys you have mentioned are modern greats but to say they "always suceeded" is very misleading. Did Jones beat the best heavyweight? Did Pac beat the best lightweight? Did Mayweather beat the best welterweight? Did Toney beat the best at any weight over 175? They'd have had to in years gone by to have been considered a "success" at the higher weight. Look at Napoles for example, a great welterweight champion but couldn't beat Monzon in two attempts and so failed at 160 and went back down 147, these days he'd have just picked an easier middleweight champion to fight instead of Monzon, beat him and the move up in weight would have been considered successful.
I am starting to get a little bored of this site and its mainly because of fools like you TFFP and Kurt, you just disagree with anyone who has an opinion. You twist yours and others arguments to support your own agenda. You are clearly a hater and absolutely belong in the GF. You are so far up your own arse it is unbeleivable. If you spoke to me in person like you speak to some of the people on here I would kick ten bells of shite out of you. You are the single most annoying on-line person I have ever known. And I know I have never met you in person because you would already be dead.
