    Ricky Hatton (PA)

    Hatton and trainer split

    This content is protected

Ricky Hatton is considering splitting with trainer Billy Graham as the recriminations from his defeat to Floyd Mayweather begin.

Hatton flew back into Manchester yesterday following the first defeat of his pro career to Mayweather and will spend the next couple of weeks considering what went wrong.

Hatton, together with dad Ray, his manager, will review everything - including Graham's position.

The two-weight world champion has been with Graham since he turned pro at 18 and together they had swept all before them until last Saturday.

Hatton feels a genuine bond to Graham, dubbed The Preacher.
But tensions in the camp were clearly evident in the run-up to Hatton's 10th-round stoppage by Mayweather.

Graham did not fly back from Las Vegas with Hatton yesterday.
Ray stressed no decision had been made. He said: "Nothing's happened to my knowledge and I would be the first to know because Ricky leaves me to handle things like this."

Hatton, 29, has also to decide who his next opponent will be. He has already had offers from Oscar De La Hoya, IBF light-welterweight champ Paul Malignaggi and WBC light-welterweight title holder Junior Witter.

"I'll have a rest, then sit down and decide whether my next fight will be at welterweight or lightwelterweight," he said.

Thats a shame for Graham. He dedicated 11 years of his life to help Hatton, trained him to the top of the 140lb division and winning multiple titles.
His fighter has 1 loss against an ATG and greatest of our era and gets thrown away like a piece of rubbish.

You really learn who your true friends are when you go through something like that.

The Mirror is a large step up from The Sun as regards reputation.

True but I wonder why he's planning to change a trainer he claims he's 100% used to and totally comfortable with. After all it was PBF's style that dropped Hatton to the canvas, he did beat Tszyu WITH Graham in his corner and the referee as well.

Because his ego has taken a hit, nobody could have prepared the limited Hatton to beat Floyd, it just wouldn't have happened.

The best part, now we can really mention the ref situation and it has merit to most, Tszyu certainly was treated unfairly in that area of the game.:yep

I think a trainer is only worth the mentality of their boxers. Angelo Dundee could seem like the best trainer ever when he had a Foreman or an Ali to work with, but couldn't do anything with the laughably uninspired Pinklon Thomas. On the other hand, I was never impressed by anyone who worked by Larry Holmes, but he came into almost every fight well trained and with a good gameplan. Occasionally, a boxer only gets really prepared properly with one trainer (Rooney and Tyson is the classic example) but this is very rare.

Only when the trainer is ridiculously bad (Correa, Lewis's 2nd trainer, comes to mind) can he be realistically blamed. Anyway, as has already been pointed out, what can be improved in Hatton? I think his failure against Mayweather was more to do with his intrinsic inability to carry out his gameplan, rather than any fault with his gameplan or conditioning.

A further problem is that Hatton's next trainer (IF they split) probably won't have the balls to get him into proper condition. Look for Hatton to suffer the "Tyson syndrome", which afflicted Bowe, and specifically the "Tyson type-Vargas" syndrome, which affects boxers who have to make weight limits. It's what happens when boxers who lack discipline get a trainer who has absolutely no authority over them.

"Hatton has failed to make weight for the second time against De La Hoya; the fight will now take place at super-middleweight..."

Anyone with brains would realise that Tszyu was treated unfairly from the very start. Just look at all the rabbit punches, headbutts, elbows, pushing...etc, it's in EVERY SINGLE ROUND. Whoever backed that up is a desperate fool.

I agree, some boxers need a trainer who isn't scared to tell them the truth, put their foot down and force their fighter to train.

I agree. I'm not sure anything could have bridged the gap in talent. Also, I'm not one of those guys that writes Ricky off as a slow, plodding, talentless white dude. Ricky is very athletically gifted. Floyd is just that good at the moment.

Here's an idea - Tszyu should train hatton. If Tszyu can teach timing (which may be an unteachable, innate trait), Hatton would have a shot. (far fetched joke...settle down)

If this comes true - then it speaks ill of Hatton's character. Unless his true reason for wanting such a split is because he feels that he cannot adavance technically if he remains under Billy Graham's tutelage.
