I read alot of negative and dissmissive comments regarding Hatton on this forum especially with his chances of even lasting 12 rds against Floyd Mayweather, but like his style or not the guy deserves a certain ammount of respect that many Americans fail to acknowledge. Not many guys would even bother to challenge the ring champ at the above weight to their own,add to this the fact that Hatton is small framed for a LW coming in shorter in reach and height than Pacman even, someone who is 2 weights divisions lower than Hatton plus the fact that Mayweather just fought at 154.I cannot think of any guys in the last 10 years who have got in the ring with the best guy above their weight in their opponents respective country nevermind against the recognised P4P champ.Until I see some other boxers taking these sort of risks then in my eyes Hatton deserves as much respect as any active fighter in the world today.
Yeah did you catch his dads comments about the fight with Floyd?? Saying that it was a win win for Ricky. Meaning that even if he loses he wins, unless he just gets totally outclassed.
So wheres Phillips respect i mean he did a far better job when Kostya was in his PRIME!!. You guys are facking jokers..
He deserves respect for taking loads of money for a fight he may well lose. In my book respect should go to the champions and challengers who get paid less than $50,000 to get battered in the ring.
Not really. Hatton who as many Europeans have told me is "the man because he beat the man" did not wish to fight Mayweather for the belt which Hatton ousted from Kostya Tzsyu's hands. He claimed to have not been ready for that challenge. Now, due to his delay, Mayweather is definitively a Welterweight. Hatton put himself in the position of having to go up in weight so he created his own obstacle. Different body frames are a part of boxing. Every time James Toney (an ex Middleweight) steps into the ring he's at a statistical disadvantage in terms of height & reach in the Heavyweight division and no one is showering him with praise for doing so . . . and he's f'n old. You want to make a big fuss about Hatton's disadvantages, well how do you think opponents of Paul Williams feel? No one cried for 5' 7" Sharmba Mitchell when he fought Paul who's modestly listed at 6' 1". We have to find ways to stop kissing Hatton's ass. As Sugar Ray Robinson will tell you 7 lbs. is no insurmountable advantage especially for a guy whose walk-around weight is purported to be around 180 lbs. A couple of inches in height ain't squat. And other fighters have enjoyed a much greater reach advantage than Mayweather. Stop trying to figure out ways to make Hatton's impending loss acceptable. All these mitigating circumstances are a part of the sport that many boxers before Hatton, and many after will face.
The weight issue bores me. Floyd started at a lower limit and have moved up and still manages to win. Ricky has fought all but once at 140, moved up, found it tough and then moved down again. If Ricky had of toughed it out at 147 he would have been in a better position physically to fight Floyd at 147.
I have respect for phillips..unfortunetly he didnt consolidate on the great victory. Still a tough son of a gun... I actually spoke to kostya lastyear when he was on a public speaking tour..He claimed he actually hadnt peaked until after the phillips bout. Believed that bout made him a better fighter. Ricky Hatton is a class fighter and hopefully he can win a few more career defining fights. Im not a fan of his but feel its unfair how he cops alot of crap for his only big win being against a ageing zoo.. A ageing zoo is alot more craftier in the ring than a ageing oscar de la moneybags..
i dont have much respect for him for the fact that he's been running his mouth about Mayweather for the longest time already but when it came to actually making the fight happen, that's when they fall back and start talking about he's not ready or needing a warmup fight and ****. now Hatton HAD to take this fight because Mayweather let the whole world know that he needed to put up or shut up. There was no excuse out of taking this fight, now he will pay the consiquences. :good
the reason hatton said that straight after beating jlc was to do exactly what he achieved, make it hard for mayweather not to fight him, and also create some initial talk and interest in the fight. if you or anyone thinks hatton doesn't want this fight your wrong.
