Golden Boy, who handles Hatton now, has signed a deal with American channel Versus to carry the double-header. Sky Sports will handle the UK broadcast.

Most surprising is that HBO did not get the fight. Perhaps there is a scheduling conflict that day with another fight on World Championship Boxing or Boxing After Dark?

One thing about Versus that is worthy of note is that they have an ongoing deal with Bob Arum and Top Rank to carry fights, who send their prospects there to get more exposure (Tye Fields and Chavez Jr. are a couple of examples.).

Does this mean that Golden Boy, who already own in-roads with HBO as Gary Shaw does with Showtime, is now trying to encroach even further by taking Versus away from Top Rank?

Also keep in mind that GBP's new deal with AEG, a global company that owns stadiums everywhere, is sure to pump in more money and offer more worldwide arenas/venues so they can sign more fighters and monopolize the sport, especially since Arum and King aren't getting any younger. Likewise I wonder what the GBP/AEG alliance will mean for European juggernauts like Frank Warren, Universum, and Sauerland.

    Thoughts?

Even more pressure for these fights to be entertaining. Nothing quite like an under-produced bad fight.

The contract between Versus and Top Rank is about to expire. Nobody's trying to steal anything, Versus and Top Rank just didn't renew.

This is just a hunch, but I suspect that Versus wants to get more boxing on air generally, and considering the number of good cards that are out there that don't get televised, they should be able to do so if they have a budget a little higher than ESPN's. Also, I suspect that they're going to sign the Contender, and have the next season of Contender air on their network, but can't announce it because they're still stuck in their affiliation with Top Rank until the contract expires.

Also, as far as AEG is concerned, that's just not how business works. GBP will have to pay market rate to use AEG facilities just like everyone else. They might get some kinds of preferential treatments, but AEG is a public company, and shareholders wouldn't stand for a public company giving below-market deals to a private company.

HBO wanted the fight on 31st May at Wembley, but Hatton wanted 24th May at Eastlands - so that's the way it went.
