Both were holding and grabbing like mad in the first rounds...there was a danger that it would turn into a slow dance or a grappling contest if the ref had not stepped in...the first couple of rounds were awful - there wasn't even any proper infighting going on, in my view...That happened only later when there was less grappling and holding...that's when the fight turned good for me.
Right, I'm ****ing sick of this. All the haters are just trying to pick holes in everything Hatton has said. For the record, he hasn't made any excuses whatsoever. A few questions for all you twats who are claiming Hatton is a sore loser: What part of "Floyd was using his elbows but I don't blame him because I would've done the same if I had the chance" do you not understand? What part of "At the end of the day the referee didn't beat me, Floyd Mayweather beat me" do you not understand? What part of "He's the best pound for pound boxer in the world and I take my hat off to him" do you not understand? What part of "He knew I could fight, but now I know he can fight too" do you not understand? I could go on and on and on - yes, of course he was a bit miffed with the referee but for ****'s sake he has been as gracious as anyone could've possibly expected him to be in defeat and is more than willing to admit that the best man won, regardless of how good or bad Cortez's officiating was. Similarly, Mayweather was full of respect for his opponent afterwards which shows him to be a far better person than some of the childish ****s on here. Oh, and for those who keep dragging up the Tszyu fight - yes of course it was a dirty fight but both fighters fought dirty, not just Hatton. And that's what I think his point was about this fight - not that he had a problem with Mayweather perhaps being dirty (in fact he gave props for him giving him a bit of a taste of his own medicine!) but the fact that the ref should've allowed them both to get away with as much as each other or not at all. I don't possess half the boxing knowledge that some do on here but this forum really pisses me off at times with all the haters picking holes in the records of world-class fighters. Not just Hatton of course but even Mayweather has come in for some unbelievably ridiculous stick in the past from those that can't stand him. How the **** can anyone argue with what Floyd has achieved in boxing? It's ****ing beyond me.
I have seen boxers DQ'd for turning their back less than Mayweather. If that is valid defense then I have a vaunted defence too
The first few rounds were awful because Cortez was stopping the action every 2 seconds. Even before anything had a chance to happen on the inside. Do you think Castillo-Corrales I was boring? If Cortez had refereed that one, and applied the same tactics as in this one it would have been. I don't think this fight could have been like that one, but it goes to show that it is NOT the referee's job to break fighters up when they get close. It's his job to wait until a clinch happens, and even then a good referee will see if the fighters can work their own way out of it. Cortez was breaking them up way too early. Like I have already said he didn't change the outcome and I'm happy that Floyd won, but that doesn't change the fact that it was bad refereeing.
Take a look - I already said that Cortez didn't effect the outcome. He changed the way the fight played out, but not the result. But whether he influenced anything or not doesn't change the fact that it was flat-out bad refereeing.
I think this is the best thread I've read yet on this fight..........it was my opinion during the whole "fiasco". Cortez should never be in a championship fight again IMO......... JET
Maybe no "excuse" but certainly some reason. When a fighter can't fight his plan he'll resort to more "risky" options and that's exactly what happened to Hatton. Floyd knew that Hatton could easily knock him out in the early rounds so he wrestled him for ten, wore him down and then knocked him out. Even the easy right hand leads that Mayweather was connecting on were a result of Hatton's risky tactics. JET
