Anyone know what the announced attendance figures at the Hatton-Malignaggi fight were? The reason I ask is because I was just reading an article about UFC 91, and their annouced attendance was 14,272. Included in that number is 3,000 plus complimentary tickets the UFC provided for the event. Just curious how Hatton-Malignaggi compared.
12,000 most if not all where brits there where many factors that hurt this fight and it still did good numbers at the gate economy (more brits would've made it) sandwiched between fights and malignaggi is not a household name (his first fight in vegas) all in all i think it was a success, mainly because of the hatton army
It was a classy end to an evening that had exceeded anxious expectations. The future remains uncertain, and economic clouds hover darkly over the horizon. Should they darken further, it might not be possible next time to attract even the 9,053 customers who occupied the MGM Grand Garden Arena on this occasion. http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/boxing/news/story?id=3720802 And the UFC didn't sell that many tickets. They only moved around 8K or so. There was an article on mmapayout.com saying how they had trouble moving the higher priced tickets, and that the presales for UFC 92 were below par as well.
I had heard 12,000 too, which I found interesting. If one of the most hyped UFC cards of all time only sold 3,000 more tickets that Hatton-Malignaggi, maybe boxing isn't so bad off comparatively. What does the Garden Arena hold?
Hatton/Paulie was not considered to be a hot card by any stretch. 12K would be insane if it actually did that. 9K would be very good. If considering Lesnar/Couture pulled in what it did.
UFC is all hype, boxing gets a bad rap anytime a fight doesn't break records. The UFC card with Lesnar vs Couture was called "The biggest UFC fight ever" Every card the announcer screams "Sold Out" which is bull****. The paid attendance for that "HUGE" UFC card was 4.8 million there were 14,272 people at the arena but only 10,845 of the tickets were sold. That means they gave away over 3k in tickets to that so called "Sold out" card. http://mmajunkie.com/news/13309/ufc-91-draws-10845-paid-for-4-8-million-gate.mma Hatton has never been a huge draw here in the states, his biggest fight besides the Mayweather fight was against Castillo. That fight had a paid crowd of 9,800 people for a 2.3 million dollar gate. http://blog.mlive.com/mayweather/2007/11/mayweather_camp_doesnt_find_ha.html This fight against Paulie did a gate of a little over 3 million but I don't know how many of of the 9,053 were paid for but the paid gate was 3 million. The tickets were too high for this card that's why they didn't sell well, plus the economy is ****. http://www.lvrj.com/sports/34953544.html If a fight like Delahoya vs Pac which is one of the biggest fights of the year gave away 1/3 of its tickets people would say boxing is dead, but when the UFC does it nobody says ****. By the way Hatton vs Lazcano did 12 million at the gate Hopkins vs Calzaghe did 11.5 million at the gate Hopkins vs Pac will do 17 million at the gate Don't believe that UFC Hype machine
I agree. Hatton-Malignaggi was not a draw at all, with the exception of the British fans. I can't imagine a ton of people heading west to see Malignaggi. Internationally, I still believe boxing is much bigger than UFC. You wouldn't know that by reading the press, though.
