Its great how much of a buzz Hatton's return is creating. It's putting boxing well and truly in the headlines, I can't remember the last time a positive story (as opposed to the negativity surrounding Haye, Chisora and the Klitschkos) got so much attention in the mainstream media. I was just listening to the headlines on the Radio 2 teatime news and it mentions Hatton's comeback. It quoted FW as saying that Hattons best days are behind him and he has no wish to see him fight on. That obviously means Boxnation failed to come to an agreement with Hatton then....................:deal
Here's Franks take on it. http://www.google.com/hostednews/ukpress/article/ALeqM5hcFoQYgr-GhbZNfmoqfijvEO6P3A?docId=N0155701347549416027A
I must be alone in thinking it's pointless. He looked ruined against Lazcano and the performance against Malignaggi flattered to deceive. Will his now cracked chin have improved from the lay off? Will he be able to recreate the head movement that he'd lost post-Tyszu? Will his fragile skin hold up? How, when he was a pretty ineffective welter, will he compete against younger, more active fighters at that weight? He was an exciting fighter in his best days, and he's been a great advert for the sport, but seeing him against that empty vessel Malignaggi on his way to a serious smashing is not my idea of a "boost" for boxing. it just feels like a freak show.
A successful comeback is rare. For every George Foreman there are loads of Robin Reids. Good luck to him though, he'll give the boxing scene a real boost, whether it leads to glory or not.
It's probably just to leave on a high. I think he doesn't like the perception of him that people have from his last fight and it probably bothers him today that he didn't win his final fight. Once he's got that out of him, he'll either then hang it up, or just have that 'fire in the belly' back and continue to fight.
I understand his reasons for doing it. They're honourable and, unfortunately for boxers, a bit doomed. But what I don't understand why everyone else is excited? He didn't just lose to Pacquiao, he got absolutely destroyed. His chin is shot. The only saving grace is that Paulie is even shitter than he was, so there's not much chance of serious damage being inflicted. But I just hope you're right and this is a last hurrah.
Why they're excited? Because it's Hatton, of course. No fighter in recent times generates the buzz that he provides. I don't expect anything from him personally at this stage. What excites me is the event. Seeing if Hatton can do anything special at this stage is just added fuel really.
doubtful, if he was that concerned about leaving on a high he would of stayed off the sniff and booze all those years he is coming back for one reason only laz and thats dollar
I'd love Hatton-Khan. There'd be a lot of intrigue to it. Hatton being on the comeback trail with no one exactly sure of what he has left and Khan fighting someone whose style is a nightmare for him. It would sell fantastically and genuinely be a British superfight. I really hope it happens and, provided he hasn't completely lost it, would make Hatton favourite. I'd fancy him to bully Khan over 12 rounds.
