This was actually very apparent back when it took place.

He made the once formidable but then fairly shot "Hispanic Causing Panic" live up to his name that night; it really did seem Hatton was a ruined fighter and on the verge of getting his lights put out again with a single blow all night.

The fact that he eked out another big-name W after that had more to do with Buddy McGirt having trashed Malignaggi's style than anything. Take away McGirt and I'm not sure Malignaggi would've lost to a 2008 Hatton.

It only rarely happens, but sometimes a great fighter can sort of catch a '2nd wind' after being written off - correctly - as shot or damaged goods.

Erik Morales, Jorge Arce, Cotto - it does happen, albeit infrequently.


Of course, this renaissance period for Cotto seems to be lasting much longer than did Morales' or Arce's.

He then went 9-0-1-1 (6) heading into the Donaire payday, scooping up another world title belt and some more solid victories on his resume. Same thing, briefly turned back the clock but even by the Jesus M Rojas bout the rust was showing again. By now he is a tattered remnant of himself.

Cotto, on the other hand, is on an upward trajectory since turning himself around four years ago. 5-2 (5) against world class opposition, all but one a world title fight, and very competitive in both of the losses, one against the p4p best.
