I would agree with you 55% on Terry, if you hadn't recommended Jamie Carragher.

Terry is seen as this brave hero that flies into challenges and the commentators lick his boots clean after the game. But ultimately, he makes those tackles because he's not as cerebral as Rio so he's not correctly positioned. And he cries his eyes out like a girl, not a good example to set at all. Unfortunately there aren't any great replacements. King is pretty good, but too unreliable.

Micah Richards isnt as good as people make him out to be he a has bit of pace but the touch of a elephant

If im honest Upson would be my first choice as he is left footed and gives a better balance at the back because of it, but im biased being a West Ham supporter:good

 

Carraghers a better centre half than either Woodgate or esp. King and damn sight more reliable both on the pitch and where injuries are concerned.

 

I worry about Carragher's communication. I can't understand him on an interview with a microphone boosting things. How Rio could decipher his screaming high pitched tones from across the pitch I don't know. I think he would look dumbfounded, something like when he came into training and heard there were drugs tests in football and he just missed it.

A partner for Gerrard
He doesn't deserve to start.
The team needs to be based around Gerrard for him to be successful and this is why Rafa has been playing him just behind Torres for Liverpool.
Playing him in central midfield doesn't work as he doesn't have the positional sense to play the role at the highest level.
Rooney plays the role Gerrard is best at so Gerrard should be dropped to the bench and used as an impact sub, which he would be very good at.

 

This is exactly what I've been saying, but people (and Capello) don't listen.

However, I don't really see a good replacement for Gerrard to play alongside Carrick. Barry is mediocre. He does everything 3 seconds slower than Carrick. Hargreaves is too limited, and unneccessary.

 

I think you are being harsh on Barry.
He's not top quality but he is perfect for the job Capello wants him to do.
He presses the opposition when they have the ball and gives them as little room as possible and when he has the ball he does the simple things (short passing, and maintaining the shape of the team). He's a good foil to get the best out of a player like Carrick (who is perfect for international football as it is nowadays).
Lampard can do a similar job as Barry too as he did in Croatia.

Also I'm not saying Gerrard is a bad player as he isn't but I think it's beneficial for the team that he doesn't start in a centre midfield role.
Maybe Capello could do something to rectify this with Gerrard but he gets too little time with the players to do this.
Even Rafa seems to have given up and in the big games prefers Alonso and Mascherano with Gerrard ahead in the role behind Torres.

 

I hate to say this, but I agree with TFFP on a number of things here

One of them being Carrick, the guy is pretty unique in England, moving the ball from defence into midfield. Two footed, accurate, composed.

The better comparison is with Pirlo though, not Xavi.

I do think he could work with Gerrard or Lampard in a central 2 as well. Cappello is unlikely to play 'wingers' - he'll ask the wide players to get involved in the game, come infield occasionally, much like Italian wide players do. So Gerrard / Lampard won't be quite so exposed / lumbered with defensive responsibilities.

Lampard and Gerrard are both fine players though so it's a tough circle to square, I'd probably plump for Gerrard on the right to be honest.

It's not just Carrick's passing, which I agree is pretty unique for an English player.

Defensively he is superb. He's not charging around like a madman, like Hargreaves, so people assume he isn't as good in this respect. He's been part of the midfield that has won 2 league titles in a row and a European cup, and most times partnering Scholes who can't defend for ****. The defensive record speaks for itself. Ferdinand and Vidic are superb, but they aren't often exposed.

 

You can't have "pretty unique", its an absolute. Somethings either unique or it isn't....;O)
