I agree with you popularity doesnt equal greatness and i dont think hatton is a great fighter, he is a good fighter with great achievements. just because he gets knocked out that doesnt mean his fans are going to stop supporting him.

I'm not trying to bad mouth Vargas or anything, but if people want compare them on accomplishments, Hatton wins. simply because he had more belts at more weights and was the linear champ for a significant period of time. If you want to make a comparison based on resume, then it becomes closer.

Hatton may not be a HoF fighter in the eyes of most here, so its just as well he has achieved more than any other opinionated **** on this site, and probably doesnt care as the real experts know what he has accomplished, real experts = his boxing peers, not forum trolls

Are they comparable? I see a lot of parallels myself.

Both very good, successful, well regarded fighters, but both fell short of actual greatness.

Both gave their all every time out, but usually lost and were brutally KO'd in their most important fights against the elite fighters.

One notable difference being that Hatton actually did manage to win a big one, against Tszyu.

Interestingly, both had a close, controversial decision win over an unheralded technical southpaw on the way up (Vargas against Winky, Hatton against Collazo), that raised some questions about both guys' limitations.

After losing officially for the first time, each against a top P4P rated fighter, they never fully regained 100% of their form or reputation. They each won a couple of fights, but showed some vulnerabilities. Then they got themselves pumped and ready and gave it one more go against an elite fighter, but it again ended with them being brutally KO'd.

Vargas of course went swiftly downhill after being KO'd the second time, and it seems very likely the same could happen to Hatton if he ever fought again - though most people don't seem to think he should even fight again in the first place.

As said Hatton did beat Tszyu and establish himself as the lineal champ of a weight class, which is a bigger single achievement than Vargas ever had, but on the flipside Vargas was never blown out to the extent that Hatton was last night. Moreover, I think Vargas put together a better run of wins at his peak (ie: Quartey, Winky, Campas, Marquez), whereas Hatton had the bigger single win against Tszyu.
