Hatton's "fans" say Witter doesn't bring any interest or money but since Hatton started ducking Witter he's had only three fights that were bigger than a Witter fight would have been. To Hatton fans: This excuse would work if he fought Mayweather, Cotto, Pacquiao, De La Hoya but it doesn't work when he fights the likes of Lazcano, Urnago, Collazo and Maussa.
No he is the linear 140 champ. I have been through this a billion times. Look, i think Witter is a threat, but not a big one to Hatton. 5 years ago the Witter of today wouldnt be in the top 10 at LW. Hattons biggest win came against Tszyu, who yes was over the hill but not shot. This is how he became number 1 in the division. Witters biggest win is against Harris, who turned down a fight with Hatton years back, and who prior to fighting Witter had fought Lazcarno, the same guy who alot of people are calling Hatton for fighting. Hatton is overated to an extent but he has proven himself, Witter hasnt he has to fight Hatton. That is a fight he will have to force due to Hattons unwillingness, but every second word by Witter is Hatton, he is like a stalker.
I think Witter has got Hatton's number and would knock him out. Also as the recognised #2 he's got every right to call Hatton out, but there's a time and a place and if this story is true he shouldn't have said what he did.
I don't get it. Other boxers would either just duck him but not pretend they aren't OR get angry and want to smash his face in... ...what being a FIGHTER and all!
So linear champs cant be overated? To be honest mate we all know the arguments & neither side seems to want to back down. For me it boils down to this. Not many would dispute Witter is the number two in the division. The champ should face his number one challenger. Hopkins did it several times, Lennox did it several times. It's what should happen in boxing & if Hatton wants to continue defending his title then he should face Witter.
Hatton has been my favourite fighter for a long time, I was touting him back in 2000 on Seconds Out and think he has been criticised way too much. He has also never been credit for his best moments by numerous posters who continually move the goal posts as to what deserves respect. However, this is PATHETIC. There is no way he can ever get the respect I had for him unless he fights Witter now. And I would not even have disrespected him for not fighting Witter if the other fights he made were good and he had not come out with some awful excuse. That is the worst excuse I have ever heard from a fighter and it is shameful. End of story.
Hatton isn't pretending anything. He's saying Witter wants the fight, he doesn't like him - so it's not going to happen. And he can say that, because he's the name - In England, in America... and Junior has no name, anywhere in the world.
It's not just THAT excuse though is it. THAT is the one that's in the paper today, he doesn't say the only reason I'm never going to fight Witter is "one day"... It wasn't a 10 second interview about Witter. That's one segment of text which nobody has even seen the actual interview. He says "I was half contemplating fighting him but" in translation, he wasn't really going to fight him even then, because he knows that's what Witter wants. He's just winding Junior up a little bit more saying "I wouldv'e fought you but... now you've said that"... Great real. It's a crap little story, but you know what the f*cking things about... and it's not "one day"....
So the prerequisite for a champion facing his number one challenger is that he must have a name is it?
Well why doesn't Witter show he's the number one challenger? Torres, Mallignaggi... fight them and prove SOMETHING for once. Instead of talking...
Fighters have done far less in recent times to earn a title shot than Junior Witter. I can see theres little point discussing this with you further though because you are unable to discuss this rationally. Witter is the number one challenger already, if we want our sport to be legitimate then these kinds of fights should happen. It's not a popularity contest.
This fight has been talked about for a long time. Witter proved he was worthy to challenge Hatton a while back. He doesn't need to prove himself all over again.
Fighters have done far less talking anyway... But he isn't definitively the number one challenger, he's just one of a group below Hatton.
He's never proven himself, just his mouth... that's it. The best name on his record is Vivian Harris. :rofl
