I love his articles. HBO needs to revisit the way it does everything with respect to boxing.

I also thought it was interesting he alluded to problems on the broadcast team without mentioning anyone specifically. I wonder why?

really good article but i don't like his dig on HBO televizing Euro fighters. Andrade vs Stieglitz was a good, competitive fight. Not all competitive fights are down to the wire. And HBO is doing well to globalize their audience.. its a new era, and people want to see their fighters face the best available, not the best from within the American border.

Careful what you wish for, I could see HBO pulling the plug on boxing altogether with those low numbers. At very least they could make all fights PPV and that doesn't do anyone any good.

there are some flaws in that article big time....I think first of all people tend to blame HBO for match making, they arent in the match making business. what HBO does is tell promoters what fights they would pay for. If they dont want said fights then the promoters IE ARUM puts the crap on PPV then blames HBO for it...the fights coming up with Pavlik and Cotto are perfect examples of that.

HBO's biggest problem in my mind is they really only want the mega stars of boxing, and in doing so they let great fights slip though the cracks. I think maybe they should spend less time and energy on old faded fighters like Jones Jr, Delahoya and Mosely, those guys are eating up dates and fights that should be going to younger fighters...that to me has been the biggest problem with boxing over the past 15 to 20 years...BAD started out as a place for young up and comers to showcase, much the way that Showtime uses shobox, but now they have started to use it as and older never was that good fighter going up vs an up and comer.

If you want more good reading, buy any of Hauser's books. The Black Lights is one of my favorites

I don't really understand why Hauser, a great writer trashes GBP and kisses Top Rank's ass all the time. Stating that 'GBP owns HBO Boxing' and quoting how Bob Arum wants to get rid of PPVs makes no sense.

In reality, in the 2nd half of 2008, Golden Boy did 1 PPV while Top Rank did 3! Marquez-Casamayor was a bad PPV, but so was Hopkins-Pavlik, and now Arum is going to go PPV with the Cotto and Pavlik mismatches, no matter what. Cotto-Jennings and Pavlik-Rubio as a PPV is a so painful joke, that even HBO laughed when they showed to door to Arum.

Other than this biased view (again) of Hauser, this is a great, excellent article which will get HBO's attention. Only question is whether they'll do anything or not.

A Thomas Hauser KO victory. Hbo is down on the floor, bloody battered and...

Will they listen to Hauser and the voice of the boxing fans and make the proper changes to make a triumphant return in 2009? Let's hope so. Well done Mr. Hauser.
