Tiger. I've seen very little of Paul Ferreri, yet his record is something pretty special. From reports he was tagged seldomly with solid punches, had a bit of an unfavourable technique.. How do you see this master of defensive boxing in a battle with Vic Darchynian??? Both southpaws, one offensive and relentless in attack, powerful and deliberate..... the other more concerned with self-preservation and picking up points through extensive counters and mild attack??
Ah ! such an easy one: [You know, in 2000 I continually badgered The Hall of Fame - Legends site to realise as I did, that Paul Ferreri was one of the greatest Australian boxing legends of ALL time, that they should immediately give legend status to, in fact I wrote to them saying words to the affect of.....the longer you take to do this, the longer you show your inaptitude and a lack of credibility".... their reply was that "only a few can be nominated each year, and his name had come "up" a few times before, but wasn't voted on" by their committee...........thanks to the heavens that they have a few newer minds there now....!!] Ferreris record is incredible. Reason, as you have indicated, is his style of boxing, boxing, boxing....with little or no risk. Ferreri fights for eighteen professional years !!!! farkin incredible, fights 857 Rounds !!! farkin incredible !!! If he had have been fighting in Italy his home town Sicilly, would have made a bronze statue of him by now.....we Australians need a kick up the arce that we have not done this already for Paul. He fought for or defended Bantam and Feather Commonwealth Titles nearly 13 times; he fought for and defended Australian titles 21 times; he fights unbeaten Zarata for the WBC world title in USA. This fight was stopped in 12 rounds; I thought Ferreri in this fight was low below his normal healthy condition and skill level - something seemed wrong, illness? weigth waisting? he just wasnt on the mark that night) Ferreri fights Australian fighters like Tony Miller, BigJimWest, Rocky Gattelari, Brian Schofield, Brian Roberts, Harry Hayes; and internationals like Arnold Taylor, Sotelo, Cordova, Moreno and John McClusky - nearly all of these fighters if fighting today would hold "versions" of a world title. Darchinyan: has fought 218 rounds, 30 wins, 2 losses, one by KO....has a ko record of 75%; Ferreri side of the leger is : 857 rounds, 78 wins, 13 losses (KOd twice), 5 draws with a 27 % KO rate, (atypical of a Palmer trained fighter) Darchinyan fights and wins Auz title fighting a fellow who he had fought twice and beaten over six rounds, and who had had a total of 3 fights...Darchinyan fights for Oceanic, IBF and IBO versions of World title, in 2008 wins WBC world super bantam title. The power of Vic Darchinyan in my opinion is his barage of punches thrown quickly. The skill of Ferreri was to wait for the bull to hit the cape and to then stab it....rightly you say he was not a heavy puncher...but he did put them away 27% of the people he fought against and won....usually though, Ferreri just went about his duty, collecting points along the way....never hastled, never bustled, never say die. Ferreri was extremely hard to hit, I sparred Paul regularly at Ambroses. Ferreri sparred flyweights, bantams, feathers, lightweights, welterweights, middleweights, light heavy and heavyweights.....he did not give one inch......never showed pain or grimaced, he was so determined and soldier like in his battles at the gym and in the ring. Ferreri is one of the greatest boxers that Australia has ever witnessed, except many of the fans out there have no idea of what a boxing champion is, should be, and should end up as....... Fans want super violence, knockouts, and full risk to be taken; their appetites are not aligned with the scientific boxing expertise that Ferreri modelled meticulously. When Paul fought on TV Ringside idiot punters began to slow clap him at times, his persistency to wait, wait, wait, wait, counter - bang.....got punters upset. Unfortunately today, we have a lot of fight fans that are somewhat uneducated by the fact that they have not personally witnessed and watched the calculated dissection that a boxer like Ferrari delivers; these fight fan baboons makr claims of the might and power of these newer risk-all, toe to toe fighting gamblers - they just do not know that the might and power of the most violent monsters often fails miserably when it is has been anticipated, calculated, countered and delivered perfectly by a boxing technician (like Ferreri)......risk takers with these sorts of brilliant boxeers are just lambs to the slaughter. FERRERI TO WIN BY KNOCKOUT OVER VICTOR CANTCOVERHISCHINAGAIN DARCHINYAN.
Many good points there Tiger and your first hand view is respected. Your call at the end is a big one and one and one I'm not qualified to endorse or critisize. What I can tell you though is that Paul is fit as a fiddle, sharp as ever, and training blokes daily without ever raising a sweat!
Thought I'd remain in the same meathead vain as one of my earlier posts here Tiger. The pics is actually former AFL football chump Warwick Capper who recently had a celeb bout against former rugby player Wendell Sailor.
Thanks CHB ............................. Ah...bloody Warwick Capper, eh? well this answers all of my confusion....I am so glad Warwick left Victoria and travelled north.(one less idiot to worry about) ............................ Last time I seen Paul was at Knox fights 2008. Me on left side of photo, Paul Ferreri the legend in the middle, and Terry Fox (wearing glasses) on the right side of photo; up until that time, I hadn't seen Paul for 38 years...... Ok Mr. SmartyPants... A+ response. Little story to co-inside with Ferreri and HOF induction. Paul was inducted into the HOF, somewhat prematurely in the eyes of many Non Victorians. Not naming names, a former Commonwealth champ from NSW who fought under a name made up to represent half negro/half mexican was quite preterbed about Ferreri being inducted before himself. In fact, he rang the Pres. of that year, yelled and screamed down the phone.. "Why the hell is he inducted before me"??? Response from Arnold, "Well CR, Paul held 4 Australian titles, never lost the Bantam title for 17 years (which happens to be a world record for a man holding any title), fought for a world title, held the commonwealth title and boxed for close to 20 years. You might like to consider that". CR... "Oh yeah" CR was inducted the following year. For intesests sake, the judges are evenly disbursed nation wide for votes on inductions.
So true, and both great fighters in their careers. They'd have fought each other without fail, had the weights accomodated, and remained just as friendly towards one another no doubt. Just the way Arnold told me the story, and the final words from CR had me in hysterics. It happens too often. Gattelari is another deseved of immediate induction. The Veterans Category is the most appropriate place, as Rocky's finest hour was the 1960's. Odd how people remember Rocky for his battle with Lionel at the tail end of the 60's, and Paul Ferreri later. Rocky is another with an exceptional career. Clive Stewart was inducted this year over Gattelari which I dont think unreasonable.
Charkey Ramon v Rocky Mattiolli at light middleweight (which never happened) would have been a good one, well for four or five rounds maybe; Mattioli was at welter I suppose, but I think he might have had the edge on Charkey.....interesting that they did not clash....I think Mattioli would have crunched him fiercely, even with Ramon's five to seven pounds weight advantage. Does anyone know why Ramon gave the game away?
