Have a look at these videos - is it too harsh to say RJJ is shot/has no chance?

I have been very vocal on this forum saying I believe Jones is shot to pieces and has no chance versus Calzaghe.

However, I don't like to just write off the greatest fighter of this generation and one of my all-time favourite fighters. You cannot dismiss Jones's talent, which he still has and can show in short bursts, like he does in these videos.

I would love Roy to win purely because I have always been a massive RJJ fan and it would be a magnificent end to a glorious career.

But my head still says Calzaghe. He has beaten top quality opponents recently, which Jones hasn't, and he will fight like a demon to preserve his excellent unbeaten record.

However, is it wrong to write off Roy on the evidence shown in these videos, or is he shot and without a realistic chance?

I'm not so sure anymore, but it may just be blind hope.

He's still got his handspeed and I'd imagine he still has power.

He's in with a chance, if a small one.

I have thought all along that Jones has a chance. I of course favor Calzaghe, but it will be interesting to see how Calzaghe deals with a man who has RJJ's hand speed (even this old one), especially if Roy does look to be aggressive at times. It also helps that Calzaghe is not much of a puncher.

I agree with you though, this may just be blind hope.

Roy is quite clearly shot, he is capable like most great fighters though of flashes of his former brilliance without being able to put it together consistently like in his prime, round 5 of tarver 3 is a perfect example of this

For jones to beat calzaghe he needs to knock him out in my opinion, calzaghe will outwork him most of the evening and will win a decision if it goes 12 as i just can't see roy being consistently good enough to win 7 rounds, trinidad fight again showed him in burst being very good but then he would go into his shell again, this will not work v joe

I really hope roy wins, but as calzaghe has a good chin i very much doubt

That last Tarver fight really pissed me off he could have beat Tarver in that fight if he had not clowned around, after that body shot he left Tarver off the hook !!

..Anyone who calls Jones shot is really in the DON'T KNOW of Boxing !

Sure, if Roy comes out and performs I give him a real chance to win this. If he is gunshy like he was in the third Tarver fight he's just going to get outworked and lose the fight. Calzaghe is serious business, so if Roy wants to win he's going to need to give his very best. No slacking in this one.

Man that round 5 in the third Tarver fight was something...

    *Sigh*

Judging from his fights after the first Tarver win, Jones has deteriorated, lacks that killer instinct he had before and although he still has speed and power, his reflexes are definitely not the same. That's the most important factor imo, cause he relied very much in his amazing reflexes back in the day, but now it's not the same.

I pick Calzaghe to win this by UD. I honestly don't see how Jones will cope with the Welshman's insane workrate and pressure. Jones would have to be aware and fight for the full 12 rounds without a breather, something very very difficult. The only chance I give Roy is if he somehow makes Calzaghe miss a lot and possibly hurts him. Slim chance of that happening though.

I'd be ultra happy to see Jones end his career with one great final performance. I just hope he does it... somehow.

He's shot. When you can only perform like your former self for a half of a round then you are shot. He doesn't have the legs to move around like he did in his prime. His stamina has dropped big time and he's gun shy. Also he doesn't pull the trigger like he use to.

The best Jones has looked since the first Tarver fight was in the Third Tarver fight and that was only for 2 m inutes in the 5th round. The whole fight before and after he looked like ****. And in the fights after that he has faced much worse fighters then Tarver and he hasn't looked that good. Not aginst Prince Ajamu who is a journey men not against Hanshaw who is a prospect that was to small for 168 let alone 175 and Trinidad who was shot and shouldn't be fighting anywhere above 160 and he was off for 2+ years. ANd the 3rd Tarver fight was 3 years ago. Roy is done. I pray that he can pull off the impossible and just for 6 or 7 rounds go back to the Roy he use to be back in 99 and 00 but I just don't see it happening. His best chance to win is to catch Calzaghe with a big shot but Joe has a very good chin. Roy maybe able to drop him but I don't think he can keep him down.

I'm a huge Calzaghe fan but I won't give much credence to a Calzaghe win here

RJJ is flat SHOT. If Joe loses, it would be a ridiculous upset. I really can't see the circumstances under which Joe loses. Roy hasn't stopped anyone in two years and hasn't fought someone of Joe's caliber since James Toney. I really doubt that Joe gets stopped. He's been down before and hurt on a few occasions, but has always recovered quickly. He's never been on ***** street or anywhere near getting stopped. People say Joe's never fought someone with Jones's handspeed, but at least Joe has been in the ring with some top-tier opponents recently. Since losing Tarver III Jones has done nothing but fight nobody's like Prince Whatever and Hanshaw, and an inactive Tito, fighting well above his best weight, who had fought only twice in six years prior to their matchup

Hanshaw has a glass chin. Dirrell knocked his ass out emphatically and Dirrell isn't that big of a puncher. So Jones dropping him in round 11 means almost nothing

People saying that Roy pot shots his way to a victory against Joe are lying to themselves. He couldn't do it against the much slower, much less active Tarver. He couldn't do it against the much slower, though very active Glen Johnson. It's not going to happen against Joe.

Joe will win a wide UD or a second half stoppage. I would be completely stunned if Jones won this fight. I just can't see any way it happens beyond a miracle, Hail Mary type knockout

Jones handspeed is still on par's with Calzaghes so for anyone to say he is shot then i'd like to know what will be the reason for his success if he beats Calzaghe ? A fountain of youth ?

Roy's legs are gone, and that was a BIG...huge part of his skill. His hnads are still fast but he can't dart in and out like he used to. Roy will block a lot, and Joe will throw a bunch of his sissy slap punches and win a decision.

what did he do the rest of the Tarver III fight? He can pull that **** out in spurts, but he cant fight like he used to for any prolonged period of time. Great, he looked like the old Roy for about 4 of 36 minutes..... still lost. Calzaghe will decimate him. Wide UD or late stoppage.
