Have a look at these videos - is it too harsh to say RJJ is shot/has no chance?

I started this thread because I thought maybe I had been too dismissive of one of my favourite fighters, and I wanted to hear why people thought he could do it so I could feel a little optimism, and thus I don't want to be too negative again, but let's call a spade a spade here - the Trinidad fight was a training bout. It was fought at a slow pace, there was no sustained aggression, no dynamism... it was far far cry from both Jones and Trinidad being anywhere near their respective primes. I thought both of them looked pretty poor (well Tito looked awful, but that was to be expected due to the weight and his inactivity).

I was more impressed by Roy against Hanshaw. Even though Hanshaw got KTFO in his next fight, Jones handled him reasonably well - but again the lack of a killer instinct was evident after his flash of brilliance in the 11th.

I am trying hard to believe in Roy for this fight, but I'm not managing it. Do you feel the same JonOli?

In Rd 5, Tarver must of been like "Oh ****, what the **** is this?", Then who knows why the **** Jones stopped trowing after that

Or... everyone knows. He was gassed. Watch the vid I posted and watch Jones at the end of the round. He looks exhausted IMO.

I do agree Jones looked GREAT in that round though. You could see the fear come over Tarver! :scaredas:

jones is easier to hit than hopkins at this point and that hurts his chances vs joe. but, jones will do much more offensively than hopkins as calzaghe can be hit esp since jones' handspeed is equal to joes (and the footspeed shouldn't be too much of an issue w/ cal trying to be all over jones), so rjj should be able to land sign more than hopkins. jones' power is eroded but he should still land the harder shots. joe will outland jones, but it should be a close fight.

back to the op, jones abilities are defnitely down, but imo he has shown some improvement and his confidence should be back (to a degree) and at least he doesn't have to worry about a big puncher.

He definitley has a chance early on and let's not forget Calzaghe is also past it although not as much as Jones.

The longer it goes on the more I favour Joe but I've followed boxing for too long to completely write off a legend like Jones even though he's obviously way past his prime (shot is an overstatement I think).

There have been much bigger shocks in world boxing that's for sure.

True, there certainly has. I suppose Jones' chances hinge on whether he has the killer instinct that he seemed to lack when he had Tarver, Hanshaw and Trinidad hurt. Maybe the big stage/occasion will see him return to the cold-blooded killer mentality of old.

To me, Trinidad v Jones was fought at a slow pace though. There wasn't much pressure or intensity applied in the fight.

I would not be surprised to see Jones win this. He hits harder and faster than Hopkins. Enough of those counters on JC could/will eventually take their toll. If Jones gets him dazed for a second or 2, it could be curtains for Calzaghe. His puinch resistance does seem to be fading afterall.

I still heavily favour JC to win on points though.

For a brief moment I can believe in him as it is Roy Jones (because of that I can't lose faith all together) - but then I think of the unanswered shots on the ropes nowadays, the spring-less legs, the stamina issues, his ring inactivity - and I think cannon fodder.

I don't want to think that - believe me. If Roy Jones won this fight I think I would throw a three day party! Sadly I can't see it happening and when I think of the Roy of the Toney fight - I realise that it is only a Roy Jones in name that is boxing nowadays.

That's the same sinking feeling as I have. I'll still hope and pray though, pray that I am wrong!

Even ignoring his now china chin, if Jones can only look like his old self for 2 rounds a fight at most, it's pretty safe to assume he's shot.

People can hope Calzaghe has started a rapid decline instead.
