I think you're wrong there, since when has steroid use been noted for giving a fighter a better chin? You either can take a shot or you can't.

No it's not. Helps to build neck muscles, which stop the head twisting as much when hit.

I think Langford looks excellent in the footage of him. I also think Gans looks good. Particularly in the marathon fight with Nelson (who was also very good within his style of fighting). The Gans-Nelson fight is the perfect argument for people who claim that the limitations of the film of the era has a lot to do with fighters looking bad back then (I only agree with this part of the time). Gans-Nelson was shot from very far away and the film is in fairly rough condition. In 2006 I did a restoration project on that film and edited back into order (it is abysmally hacked up) corrected the speed, stabilized the jumpy image, zoomed in on the fighters. It wasnt perfect but it was a lot better than it had been. You could see a lot more of what the fighters were doing and it was impressive. Gans had excellent timing, was a great counterpuncher, and could really use the ring. Nelson was crude but those roughhouse bangers always have been. Within that discipline of fighting he was very good, showed a ton of heart, was strong, tough, and kept on coming. Selling someone like Gans short is foolish. We have 3 films of Gans: 1. which he took a dive in that gives us absolutely no inkling of his abilities except to say he couldnt act his way out of a kindergarten play. 2. His fight with Herman which he looks very good in. and 3. His fight with Nelson which when cleaned up is impressive. Some of those old timers look bad I admit. Fitz and Corbett come to mind. But others look as modern then as anyone (ODowd, Gibbons, etc.).

Wilde looks fantastic on film. His judgement of distance, feinting, counterpunching, and slipping are as good as it gets.

Ketchel-Papke IV was definately considered at the time the least pleasing of their four fights which actually lends credence to the idea that both fighters were better than that film shows.

Wilde reminds me of Canto, but with far more offensive variety and power.

I was astounded by how defensively versatile he was.

Load of cobblers, you're born with a good chin or not.

Holyfield had a great chin. But it is a fact that his neck muscles/traps got bigger as time went on, and that he used 'roids.

The fact is yes his traps got bigger but that doesn't mean his chin got better and neither is it a fact he used steroids.

Pretty damn obvious to anyone who doesn't let their fandom get in the way.

I've always thought its innocent until proven gulity??

Tyson more than likely juiced at some point in his career, infact I'd say most modern fighters have.

Gans looks amazing to me. This is Benny Leonards idol. A man langford called the greatest he ever seen and he beat him. Fitzsimmons said he was the cleverest fighter he ever seen. He was the most lauded fighter of his time by fellow pro's.
I just wish there was more footage of him.
