even if it was smeared (which it was more than that) a thin layer if placed in the right part when hardened is more than enough to be effective........

Without having to look in a dictionary, I can safely say a smear is certainly more than TRACE amounts, no?
No one is saying that Margarito and Capetillo wheeled in a industrial sized container of quikcrete and dunked Margarito headfirst. It need not be all that messy considering the varying degrees of consistency plaster of paris can be mixed to. Even easier to keep clean if pre-treated.
