I made this exact thread a while back but didn't make it a public poll. This time I'm going to make it slightly more specific as to how much they may have.

Personally, I think they have. back in his day, he was awesome. Athletic ability at his disposable, a true entertainer, and he was the p4p king for the best part of a decade. However (and it is my own personal opinion), his losses have had an impact on his ATG rating. Post prime, he's valued money before legacy which whilst may be understandable, I don't think is excusable, at least not if one intends on maintaining a solid ATG rating (and of course, having lost the fights in which he participated post prime).

This thread isn't intended in anyway to slander Jones Jr, he does stand as one of my favorite boxers of all time. It's intended to gauge public opinion to the subject in question.

 we made similar threads at the same time. I don't think his current fights affect his legacy....they do affect him currently though, nobody wants to see him or Holyfield be made into a circus sideshow.

Did Joe Louis tarnish his legacy?

Did Sugar Ray Leonard tarnish his?

    What about Ali?

No. Jones is far passed his prime and is just another of MANY examples of a great fighter hanging on too long.

Somewhat, not the calzaghe, hopkins and green ones, roy was shot to **** by that point but tarver and johnson did have an effect on my ranking of jones. Before that i had him borderline top 10, i was overrating him probably at the time but i did reevaluate him after this.

It did also point to a slight dodgy chin which before we where unaware of during his prime which needs to be taken into account when discussing him against the biggest punchers in Light heavy history on a head to head basis

of course not. and if he fights again and loses again it won't affect his rating either (though i pray he hangs'em up)

    i agree w/ post #4 and #5

In my opinion, it tarnishes his legacy a bit because to me it shows that he pretty much depended exclusively on his freakish athleticism and had a hard time after he started to age. He couldnt compensate.

so you would agree then that about the time he started to age and slow down is about the time he began the downside of his career?

yeah, I agree with that. But IMO a fighter who manages to compensate after they age a bit should be rated higher......for instance, after ali made his comeback, he wasnt as fast as he was liston-era.......so he compensated using his rope a dope. another is archie moore, who won fights well into his 40s.

yes it has...CLEARLY..do i want i too? not at all..is it fair??

NOT ONE SINGLE BIT...but if he retired after the ruiz fight..we'd be at the LEAST be arguing how he IS the greatest of all time.......bar none...

i hate the fact that when a guy is that passed it..he still gets punished in his overall career rating..its not f*cken fair...its just not..it shouldnt matter at all if he's that past it..sure the MYSTIQUE and aura can suffer..but its bull**** that there overall rating gets punished when the guy is that past it in his losses..

but thats just how it is..his aura is basically dead...the public is stupid for doing this to him but he shouldve just stopped after the 1st tarver scrap..he did this to himself and the audience has judged him and thats how it is.

i hear ya and have to agree that longevity and being able to compesnate and still find a way to win should be a big factor in where you rank.

on the other hand, how you perform when you were prime and at your peak really shouldnt be affected by how you do when your not prime and at your peak.

so i guess it all depends on what factors you favor more when weighing a fighters career. how long he can hold out and still win or how good you were at your prime.

Jones was monster in the prime, the loses shows two things, that he slipped permanently at the end and that his chin is garbage which bring back all the doubt's about missing names on his record who were able to really test his chin in his prime.

I think overall the majority of fans in the future will remember him for his abilities in his prime rather than his defeats when he was old and shot.

I also agree that he should hang them up now,and ive held that view before the Joey C fight
