Hung in there way 2 long...Most fighters do that...and in years to come many more will.... History will judge and with such a well documented career i don't think his legacy will fade!

On a personal note: You could see he was shot after Tarver 1, hope he hangs them up soon for his own healthsakes

One of my all time greats. But we have to admit that most of his prime was wasted fighting bums. Thats a stab that would've effected his ATGness. The KO defeats crushed him in my opinion.

    Hell yes!

had he retired after tarver 1, people would put him in atg top 3.

now he is seen as chinny and untested in his lhw r

Of course his losses tarnished his legacy.

He was PRIME when he struggled against Tarver the 1st time. All these 25 lbs reduction, etc, are bull**** excuses. That was proven when Tarver KOed him in the rematch.Jones has been too cautious and hesitant all his career and we all know now why - his chin is china.

Before he fuoght Tarvet the 1st time, Jones was already in my top 10 GOAT. I thought he is unbeatable. I am even sold on the idea that he could have beaten Rocky Marciano. Now he barely cracks top 30.

Any fighter who stays long enough for us to say, "I wish he walked away..." has had an effect on his legacy. At the same time this won't be what we remember RJJ for. So it has little to no effect on his legacy.

    Not so much.

Of course, he would probably be one of the greatest of all time if he had retired in 2003. Or if he hadn't lost the first Montell Griffin fight. However, most of his losses were when he was past his best or shot, so the damage to his legacy is minimun.

He doesn't rank higher in all time great rankings because he didn't face the best. He didn't face the best at 160. He didn't face Eubank, Benn, etc., at 168. He didn't face DM at 175, and didn't face Lewis, Byrd or Klitschko at heavyweight. That's why he's not a Top10 of all time.

I think the manner of his defeats to Tarver and Johnson have effected his legacy. Nobody questioned Jones chin before those dramatic KO's but his durability will now always been seen as a liability.

His losses to Hopkins and Calzaghe mean nothing though he was so shot for those fights I am amazed anyone thought he had any chance at all.

Of course it will hurt him! At one point many people thought he was superman. i was never a fan but I do recognize greatness. But after the Tarver and Johnson loses he lost that sense of invisibility. Now people remember how fu(king crappy he was in his last few fights.

Roy Jones was clearly not "PRIME" in the first Tarver fight, and the weight is not a bull**** excuse, Roy has not looked the same since dropping that weight, he was already 34 as well, no one can tell me that the weight didn't have a factor, just compare the Roy that fought Ruiz and the Roy that showed up in the Tarver fight, anyone that can't see that is an idiot.
I had never seen Roy Jones tired in his entire career, and he was clearly sucking wind and had sluggish legs in the first round.

His chin declined with age and reflexes as well.

You say you had him in the top 10, you can't lose accomplishments, he still has done the same things that made you put him in the top 10 in the first place, he got old, it happens.

In years to come after he retires he will be looked at in more of a historical sense, and people won't so much remember the fresher images of the man that is fighting today. His ranking will improve when he retires.

    In the short term, yes.

    Way down the road, No.

Does anyone really care that a Parkinson-syndrome suffering Ali lost to Holmes and Berbick when he should have been rockin' in his rockin' chair ?

As far as everyone is concerned. Roy Jones Jr's career officially ended when he beat Tarver the first time. Some even say his career ended when he beat Ruiz.

Every fight after that has no real impact on his legacy and are just for money. Look at what all the other greats did, they all lost too.
