Obviously, Calzaghe threw and landed more leather against Jones than anyone--ever. But one thing that gets loss in the mixed, is, a lot of times when Jones did fire, he missed the target completely. Easy to overlook something like this when Calzaghe's offense was on full display, but I never recall Jones--an extremely accurate puncher--missing the mark more often than he did last night. He is such a complete fighter. Even if he does not fight Hopkins again, I kind of hope he has at least one or two more before caling it a career.
Yeah, just great defense from Joe. Even when Joe would stand still with his chin out right in front of Roy he still could rarely hit him.
I was actually amazed by how elusive Calzaghe looked against Jones at times. He was right there to be hit, but often, he would move his head just enough to escape harm's way just in time. Very impressive defensive display by Calzaghe. Joe's instincts inside the ring are an absolute marvel. He knows where to be, he knows how to attack, he knows how to defend, and he is always focused and determined. Jones looked ****ing helpless in there at times.
Jones really only looked inaccurate toward the latter half of the fight when he was clearly fighting on heart, nothing more. He was actually very accurate early on.
I hope he retires - he has nothing left to prove. Not everyone can turn back the clock like Hopkins has done on more than one occasion. If Calzaghe wants to retire undefeated, then now is the time. Think about this - if RJJ had retired after the Ruiz fight, his stock would have been at an all-time high. Same with Holyfield if he had retired after the second Tyson fight or after the second Moorer fight. For most great fighters, at some point there's nowhere to go but down.
I cannot blame Joe if he retires. You are correct--if he wants to retire undefeated, he can do so now while having nothing left to prove! :good However, I still consider Calzaghe and Hopkins #2 & #3 respectivey on the P4P charts. Both are still awesome craftsmen inside the ring. The fan in me really, really hopes to see it.
:good This guy (love him or hate him) has some kind of sixth sense in the ring that only the great ones are born with. He has made a fool out of me earlier in his career-when I was sure he would get caught, keeping his hands, low chin in the air-but what do I know.
yeah i was impressed by how calzaghe took the straight right and hooks inside away from him once those started missing jones looked bemused
