Haven't seen a top fighters punch resistance decline so hard since RJJ

Kovalev looks very weak and fragile now.
Only 3 Years ago the canelo fight would have been absolutely unthinkable and Kovalev was menacing monster, that I had trouble imagining him losing. Pascal, a top LHW at the time tagged him and Kovalev shook it off no problem. Didn't look close to being hurt against ward in the first fight either. There was no reason to question his chin.

Reminds me of RJJ who looked untouchable until about 2000-2001, then started getting hit a bit against Julio Gonzalez and Clinton Woods but so what he's still superman, he took some hard shots against John Ruiz early on so there was no worry about his chin. 1 year later he had been laid out by tarver and glen Johnson.

yeah, 30 power hooks to the head and he falls over like a bowling pin... was a time he could take 90 of those.

The writing was on the wall in the first Alvarez loss. There was nothing particularly sickening about any of the shots that did for him.

Then in the fight against Yarde. A crude slugger with no world level experience. He was nearly iced based on being caught by one punch.

Now he has been iced by a MW who wasn’t even able to stop any of the top MWs

Kovalev is no longer elite level at LHW. He is somewhere in between being way over the hill and completely shot. He shouldn’t be fighting any of the elite level LHWs because it would be bad for his health.

No kidding. Just in the last 30 seconds of the fight he took 5 hard shots to the head.

Yes no doubt. We'll still be watching kova in five years time, getting hammered by not very great heavyweight s...

From a purely boxing perspective, Kovalev is still one of the best in the world. But his body can´t keep up.
I though he fought a brilliant fight and looked sharp.
But as the fight went on, Kovalev slowed down and Alvarez broke him down.

Kovalev can hold his own against anyone. No one will just outbox him. But father time has done him in.

Roy was rarely hit with flush shots cause he avoided the cleaning of his clock, so we never got a definitive answer on his chin, and I don't think Kovalev opponents took full swings at him in his prime, fearing of what might come back.

So it's a combination of reflexes aging, conditioning deteriorating, less ability to slip, parry or move away from flush shots, slower last-fight recovery, difficulties in cutting weight and opponents opening up more freely. Actual punch resistance is a fighter's last resort, and neither Kov nor Roy truly, really needed it when they absolutely dominated pace and space.

Clenelo didn't look in the least bit surprised when he saw Kovalev hit the deck. He knew damned well Kov was a pale shadow of his former self, his punch resistance diminished and that he would be able to take him out clean in the second half of the fight when he predictably gassed. Not even the merest hint of surprise or excitement was evident in his body language. His demeanor didn't change one iota because he knew going in that Kov was there for the taking just like Team Yarde did when they signed on the dotted line after turning down at least 2 offers to fight him in 2017 and 2018 ie. before he'd been KO'd by the relatively light hitting Eleider Alvarez.

RJJ’s punch resistance took a massive hit when he had to move down two weight divisions. Even his stamina took a major hit there and was apparent in the first fight against Tarver.

Excessive steroid use can actually cause bone density loss, which makes your bones fragile. Could explain how weak his chin was, pure glass, he had no chin, none!

Kovalev also looks like he lost all of his power. And not only in this fight. Watch Ward 2, or Eleider Alvarez 1 and 2
