Went to york hallyesterday,my mate mark douglas fought ashley theopane, basically he battered him, must have won six of the eight, the ref decided otherwise though, disgarceful decision, one of the worst i have seen. We need three judges in place for these fights, one man cannot look after the action and still judge the result.:bart

    Hi Stuey,

I was at York Hall yesterday and thought it was an excellent show.

Theopane vs Douglas was an excellent fight and it's a shame there had to be a loser. Both men deserved the respect they received from a mostly knowledeable crowd.

In my opinion I thought your boy won by 2 rounds (5-3) and was suprised by the decision. However, I must admit that although I was surprised by the decision I don't think it was disgraceful. Scoring is subject to each persons interpretation and a lot of the rounds were close.

I don't know if you saw the Lee Cook vs Mark McCullough fight but I thought that decision was a lot worse than your guys.

All that said, it was one of those off-camera events at York Hall that reminds me why I love the sport. Credit and respect must be given to Left Jab promotions as nearly every fight was intersting or competitive and it was matchmaking to provide an education for fighters and entertainment for the crowd rather than to pad out a record.

Next time you speak to Mark please pass on my thanks for his part in a great day out.

Mark Mccullough is one of my best friends, we have boxed together for years. I thought he lost though, i felt he punched himself out after the knockdown in round one and cooks fitness told. Just goes to show how scoring is subjective!

i will let both of the Mark's know:good

Refs should solely be looking for infringements and making sure the fighters stick to the rules. He should not also be looking at ring generalship, clean punching etc

Richard Steele (IMO, the best modern referee) said he had to judge fights early in his career as well as ref them.

He stated he felt the practice was dangerous as well as almost impossible to do properly.

As stated already on the thread no referee should score as well as ref the fight.

But to help on expense I do believe all fights below national title level, being judged by just one judge.

I saw Stueys post yesterday, not seen the rest.

I always found it better in some ways if the ref was the decider.

He was in there next to you's for example, he was understanding and noticing your will and desire, more so than 3 or whatever guys sitting ringside. REGARDLESS of country etc.......

BUT I would rather have a ref from the same country as my opponent than i would 3 randoms, presuming they will be honest and see my will etc

Now, a referee's mentality can also be blurred etc as he is curently in the mix too.

Btw, do refs actually tally up a card of there own, i have never noticed and i have seen a fukn ton of Ref decided fights.......

A ref to judge a fight when both are square say, going into the last 3 rounds, i would presume, a ref just like a viewer will be concentrated more so on one guy than the other, plus he is also knowing he has to decide.

This cant be easy. Btw, does a ref get more for "officiating the result" as well as the fight itself ?

This is maybe why we have 3 ringside "refs" so one may not be distracted with a fighters forwardness or , negativity, regardless of the final goal.

Im trying to find reasons for and against refs deciding a fight.

    I can and cant.

Any fight should have 3 ringside "refs" not from the fighters ( both ) countries...Eg foreign ( ok, then the bribery starts, right ? )

Maybe thats easier said than done regarding refs etc, at least if it is, it will make the authorities etc make a point of the teaching and learning and progress of refs. Its JUST as important as the fighters themselves.

Im still not "undecided" rather, trying to find a solution, not that it will matter.

    Good thread btw

I don't tihkn referees should score fights.

Firstly, for most shows there is more than one referee (most of whom judge as well) at ringside, and secondly, how much does it actually cost?

Even if you paid a guy - who is already there - £50 per round (minimum £200 per fight), and take a bit off the actual referee I am sure it would balance out!

I think they only get £100 for a British Title fight anyway, thats ref and judges.
and I'm sure the ref only scores in fights up to this level so thats 4,6,8 and 10 rounders where just the ref scores and again i think he gets about £100/ night not fight so if he does 5 fights in one night thats £20/ fight

    here here!

sum refs are extremely biased as well due to past meetings with fighters
