It's the opposite actually, 90% of boxing gyms in the city are prohibitively expensive and aimed toward the white-collar "fitness class" demographic incl women in the market for cardio and half-assed self defense training and children whose parents want to buy them some discipline but don't live near a McDojo, and well-off people just looking to shed fat.

So what about the real gyms? Because here in London I am 20 minutes away from a proper amateur gym and there's few others in my area as well.

 

Sonically, this has been such a joy the last like 6 minutes. Maybe I’m just extremely baked but I’m thoroughly enjoying the foreign music followed by the Russian anthem on sax.

There are so few here, sadly - at least in metropolitan areas, might be different in the boondocks. Dying breed in this country. Honestly a wonder that we still even yield any champions or have a functioning amateur scene.

I live in the densely populated New England, and just a short bus ride from NYC which is basically the Western hemisphere's version of Hong Kong or Tokyo in terms of being a tightly cloistered urban mass with many different social classes represented- and nowhere around here in the northeastern US can you easily find what you and I would consider a "proper" no frills gym, without first conducting an exhaustive needle in a haystack search. On the West coast they have Wild Card and Big Bear and a bunch of other "come one, come all" gyms that run the gamut from catering to white collar types and poor kids who actually want to compete...but over here on the Atlantic seaboard? Slim pickings indeed.
