Sei Shiraishi vs. Tsuyoshi Satō, 8 rounds @ super flyweight

 

Round 1

Shiraishi circles and shows the diminutive southpaw a long, languid left jab. Both cautiously having a look at each other from a distance. Shiraishi gets through with a couple of glancing right crosses in the final minute. Satō facing a big reach disadvantage.

Both are 28 year old Tokyo residents, with very similar pro records. Sei "Joe" Shiraishi comes in 11-1-1 (6), and Tsuyoshi Satō a near-identical 11-2-1 (6).

 

Round 2

Shiraishi planting the long left jab on the nose of Satō, timing gaps between his gloves when the latter is opening up offensively. Satō able to dive in and score on the body pretty consistently, but can't reach the chin of Shiraishi when headhunting. Both men swat the air with their opposite stance jabs. Satō eats a straight right lead at the warning clap.

Round 3

Satō is using lots of jab feints and now looking to bowl in a left hand lead, but he's telegraphing his intentions. Shiraishi able to slide his feet laterally and outside so that Satō is never in position to reach him. Shiraishi measuring with his jab, pushing into Satō's forehead at times with it, and nailing him with the odd right cross on the chest or chin.

Round 4

Satō is now selling out, coming up on his toes and hooking with both hands. Shiraishi catches him with check hooks and short rights or uppercuts. Crowd getting into the swing of it as the action in the ring keeps teasing an eruption. Shiraishi tosses a double jab at the sternum, then puts out a right which Satō sidesteps. Patty-cake with the jabs. Satō swipes up top with a right hook, dodged. Flush lead right by Shiraishi. Satō jabbing into the zone-defense left wrist of Shiraishi. Satō darts in, feints a left. Then darts in and throws one, but only nicks the belt line. Shiraishi countering with jabs while taking baby steps backward.

Round 5

Satō is pressing forward, not throwing. Shiraishi backing up, feinting. No punches half a minute in. They flurry together and Satō picks up Shiraishi, legs off the ground. Wild hooking exchange, both hitting arm. Left on the body by Satō. Shiraishi looking a bit nervous by the increased physicality, skipping backwards, setting his feet, and throwing hard lead rights to slow Satō down. Nice flush right hand down the middle by Shiraishi. Satō with body shots. Clinch. Shiraishi with a 1-2, hitting the crown as Satō bends his neck forward diving in. Right jab up top and torpedo left on the body by Satō. Shiraishi walks Satō onto an uppercut. Shiraishi tries holding the left arm out like a stick, but Satō muscles through and throws a right hook, hitting the side of Shiraishi's head.
