I can't remember the last time a fight caused such a strong polarization of opinions. It's fascinating and makes for great reading :good Can anybody think of another fight that divided opinion so much? :think
In the UK, you have the example of Tyson doing a couple of fights here. That was plenty controversial at the time. I don't know if any boxing fans were objecting but...
I just feel the whole situation is out of proportion to be honest with you. I don't and will never condone what happened in Germany but the fact remained it implemented a mouth watering tie for the boxing fans. Worser things have happened in boxing and in other sports like Marlon King and Ched Evans being sent to prison for **** in football, Tyson/Lewis fighting in a press conference, Drug taking in all sports, Mayweather being sent to prison for domestic abuse. Now they are still/were allowed to compete at the highest of the sport so what makes this different. Yes it is good for boxing as we FINALLY get a fight we want to see. Frank was always going to make this fight it is worth to much money and BBBofC are just being picky and pathetic. They would be tore to pieces in court if they was to revoke anyone's licence and thats a fact. We are all excited for the fight so just let it happen
What is it with Haye! Yes those were fights that divided opinion with regards to the outcome, but what adds an extra element to this is the issue of ethics/morals. Both of these fighters have become real 'marmite' fighters :bbb
Haye-Harrison had similar out of the ring issues. Audley didn't deserve the shot, it shouldn't have been PPV, Haye was ducking the Klits to take the fight etc.
I didn't really follow the build-up to Haye v Harrison. It was less than a ****ing joke. It really didn't deserve much attention. I don't read the tabloids so probably missed a lot. It makes me sick that the paying public are so gullible. This one is slightly better, because both guys have a genuine chance of winning. I thought Haye-Klitschko had a lot of polarized opinions. Some people thought Haye was a twat, others actually believed he was the saviour of HW boxing. In due course it was PROVEN that Haye is indeed a twat.
I'd forgotten that fight had all that in the build-up To be honest I've probably put most of that fight into a dark corner of my sub-concious, never to be looked at again
I thought Wladimir would probably win, although I did think Haye had a puchers chance because of Wladimirs 'chin history'; but I was surprised at just how good he was. I thought it was a bit of a masterclass to be honest:bbb
How about Leonard-Hagler? Leonards inactivity, never fought at the weight, the detached retina, Hearns deserving a rematch, other contenders also left waiting for a shot, Haglers mooted retirement...
Yes that must have been a shocker at the time. I've watched/read a few interviews with Leonard lately (promoting his new book) and I hadn't realised just how much of an audacious challenge it was:bbb
Yes, nother good example, but what I really mean is a fight with more than just an outcome that divides opinions. Haye/Chisora has so many layers........... From the outcome, to the fighters involved, to the politics and the history behind it:bbb
