David Haye says he would have no interest in signing Olympic gold medallist James Degale, feels Irishman Darren Sutherland is the better prospect and insists his own middleweight George Groves would knock him out if they met in the professional ranks. Groves, who will make his professional debut on the undercard of David Haye’s next fight in November, beat Degale in the last ABA finals but due to the latter already qualifying for the Olympics, he did not have a chance to represent his country in Beijing. With Groves a charismatic, vastly popular East End fighter and Degale the West London golden boy, there seems the possibility of a great rivalry to emulate Nigel Benn and Chris Eubank's in the early 1990s. // Haye is not convinced though. “It could be,” Haye told setantasports.com. “He’s not my cup of tea in terms of style though. “I’ve got a guy in George Groves who beat him in the last domestic fight he had pretty handily. “I think as a professional. He wouldn’t only beat him, he’d stop him. “I don’t look at the gold medallists and say they’re the best guys. “It’s more like fencing then it is professional boxing. "People win two points in the first round then run, for the rest of the fight. In a professional fight they’d lose that round. “I think Sutherland the guy Degale beat in the semi-final, as a professional. He’s got a lot more scope for winning a world title. “If you look at myself, Ricky, Joe didn’t go to the Olympics. A lot of the Best British fighters didn’t go but had the style to win an world title, being an Olympic champion and a world champion is worlds apart. “And as the amateur game is changing with the computer scoring that is killing the sport they’re getting further apart.”
I am inclined to agree. The current scoring system doesn't encourage effective boxing, it encourages single lunging shots and running away. Although Richie Woodall's whinging was beginning to grate at the close of the tournament it must be said that he had a point!
I can't believe I used to be a fan of this guy. His cheeky confidence from 2003 - 2005 was refreshing but since the beat Mormeck, he's turned into an arrogant, obnoxious *****. Way to bury a kid before he's even turned pro. **** Haye. I can't wait till Wlad flattens him.
Yep he his a nob head at times, usually when he stars talking. It will be hilarious when Monte Barrett destroys him.
Bull****. He can make a good pro eventually. It will take adjustments, and a lot of learning fights, but he can do it. He's not as suited as even Khan was, who still has obvious amateur flaws on the inside. However, the natural talent is there, its up to what the kid is prepared to put in, and whether he believes his own press. He needs to stop slapping so much, learn to sit down on punches, learn how to work on the inside and not just tie a guy up. Use a jab more often to stop people closing the distance so easily, he needs more variety rather than just a straight left and uppercut. It's possible though, he has speed, power is there if he uses it more efficiently, reactions, nice timing and counterpunching, decent defence.
It's a bit shitty to get a bit of publicity for Groves off the back of De Gale's gold by putting down De Gale, but I can't say I disagree with the overall point. Couldn't see De Gale being anything more than a domestic level pro.
I think Degale could well struggle in the pros, he has massive adjustments to make. Its far too early to say 'never' but I'll be surprised if he makes it all the way. Haye is right when he says that the amateur game is so separated from the pro game these days that Olympic gold means less and less as far as being suitable to make the transition between the two sports.
What has Groves shown to say that he will go far? I hope he does well but plenty of ABA champs have gone onto do **** all pro. As for Sutherland he will no doubt be given an easy ride due to him just being a crude slugger. I doubt we will see him progress too far in the pro ranks.
**** david haye reckless twat, go and have some brutes shag you in a cage this idiot hates slick boxers, he thinks the pro game is all about rushing in and tasting corkscrewing hooks i hope wlad or james toney send this ***** to the cage
He's definately got too much to say, its gone right to his head.Defo ko needed here, shut him up....For a bit.
I used to like Haye. He was an exciting fighter, with masses of potential and back in the day, there was an air of confidence about him but he said tongue in cheek, with humour. He was respectful of his opponents and of the fact that he got his tactics horribly wrong against Thompson. Now he's an arrogant ***** that think's himself above British boxing these days in general. Not only that, but those vulenrabilities remain. His world will come crashing down when he's inevitably crushed by Wlad. And he will be.
looks like degale has already signed with warren then. haye would be a fool to not try and sign degale or any of the other olympians. he is right though, in a pro fight groves and sutherland smach degale right now. and if both those guys are with haye they will get to domestic level a hell of allot quicker than degale.
