    Hi all,

I'm about to book my hotel and flights in Germany for the Haye fight. I was planning to fly and stay in Dortmund, I've read that if you have fight tickets that you can travel for free to the Stadium. Does that sound like a plan or madness?

Sounds like a possibly - its Germany after all, not like here in the UK where you would need a mortgage for a 10 mile journey on public transport

Transport is free on the Rhine/Rhur transport system(VRR). Take the 302 tram from lower level of Gelsenkirchin main railway station to the stadium for free.

I'm still unsure if the fight ticket will permit you to travel free from say Dusseldorf or Dortmund to Gelsenkirchen, but if not, it's not very expensive anyway

as others have said, fight tickets will only get you the short hop from Gelsenkirchen to the stadium. The best thing to do imo is go to http://www.bahn.de/db_uk/view/index.shtml and order your tickets from Dortmund to Gelsenkirchen online. I booked two open returns Dussledorf to Gelsen for 50 euro and they arrived within a couple of days...saves messing about on the day.

But do you have to specify which train you'll be travelling on?

no mate, I just picked trains roughly around the right time, when you click purchase it says...

    "Standard fare
Full flexibility (not a specific-train booking). Exchange and refund free of charge before 1st day of validity, exchange and refund charge of EUR 15 as from 1st day of validity. "

Not trying to be a smart-ass but maybe you should have a look at the VRR (local public transport) website instead.
The mighty Deutsche Bahn is only responsible for the expensive IC and ICE (express trains meant for long distance trips) and doesn't show the "VRR only" trains on their website (thus the "fares not available" disclaimer, those strictly regional trains are VRR business)

The VRR has got this little tool to calculate how much money you'll have to pay for each trip/a day ticket.
    http://www.vrr.de/preisstufenfinder/

I have yet to find the English equivalent to this calculator, so please refer to their manual for precise translations of the ticket names: http://www.vrr.de/imperia/md/content/en/abc_e.pdf

If you have any further questions, just ask.

thanks chillman, just one question, am I correct in thinking my DBhan ticket is valid on VRR trains aswell? As far as i can remember you couldn't board an Ice with a regional ticket but you were fine to board a RE, RB etc with an Ice ticket, that is correct isn't it?

Does the VRR run from either Dusseldorf Main Airport to Dusseldorf Train station and /or from Dusseldorf Train station to Gelsenkirchen? I still haven't quite worked out what the difference is between the VRR and the 'normal' trains:huh

vrr will cover all those journeys. From the airport to the train station will cost 2 euro. From the train station to Gelsenkirchen you need a category D ticket, 10.50 euro each way or 23.50 for a day ticket which would cover all journeys within the wider area. I'm not sure whether the day tickets are valid for 24 hours from first use, or midnight to midnight..obviously worth bearing in mind as more than likely it'll be sunday morning by the time you head back to dussledorf.

does it make much difference if you book in advance or just on the day?

Also how much are trains and buses from Weeze Airport to Dusseldorf?
