Cotto never weightlifted his way to Welterweight though like Haye did, Haye could of been a career cruiser If he wanted to be before the bodybuilding, so It's his own fault his punch resistance at Cruiser Is not too good at times.
Yeah Haye is a HW ... I don't think he's a natural cruiserweight ... 6'3 230ish with speed and power = a top notch HW the added weight will help his chin and his power ... only thing he has to do is add more weapons to his arcenal ... maybe work more off his jab and throw more left hooks. Everyone knows he can drop anyone with the right, but HW aren't dumb and alot more than ever can box and be light on their toes.
Haye said he had trouble making weight after the Mormeck fight and didn't feel comfortable dropping so much weight. I don't know if he lifts weights but if he does he will be exposed because weight lifting isn't good for boxers. He doesn't look like he lifts weights --
Theres no added muscle on his neck though for a guy whos going to Heavyweight, you can see he augmented his way to HW. He should strengthen his neck muscles to help absorb shots better when that left Is low.
Thank you. Money is the name of the game and Haye will cash in at heavy. But it might not be the best long term move for him. While he does have the power and skills to beat a lot of guys, he equally has the vulnerability to be beat by a lot of guys too! So while I could see him beating someone like Ruiz who has trouble with quicker fighters, or even koing someone like Rahman with a suspect chin....I could equally see him getting beat by a journeymen type fighter like Ahunanya who takes a really good punch and lands a good punch, or someone like Povetkin making him work at too fast of a pace and Haye wearing down late. All I am saying is that Haye doesn't have staying power at heavyweight, and I really like him as a fighter.
Haye admits he can bench 179kg /390lbs so he definately lifts and his trainer has said he wants Haye at 238lb while mantaining speed.
Mate, what the **** are you watching in the HW division? A lot less than EVER before are fat, slow and crap. There are no fighters even remotely as fast as Tyson, Ali, Patterson, Louis....There are no fighters bar Wlad who are even close to the skill of Lewis, Holyfield, Tyson, Holmes, Ali, Frazier, Louis, Charles, Walcott... The divison is AWFUL. With Wlad as an exception, the "top" heavys are sluggish, chubby and very limited. Haye favours the right hand because it is his biggest shot, but he has stopped opponents with body shots, he hurt Mormeck with a short uppercut and left hook combo before he KO'd him and he has a good jab. His chin will be his major problem and possibly still his stamina. in terms of his shot variety and the speed and power he has he is well ahead of most of the crop.
238 might be a bit to heavy. I think Haye would be better around 220-230 as long as his tight at the weight.
Bad move on Cotto for lifting weights ... I remember that being a big problem w/ Shane Mosley during his reign at SWW. Weight lifting is designed for temporary strength ... said RJJ & Emanuel Steward. I think that if Cotto lifts weights - it won't help his power or his muscle stamina at all. He's been doing good so far but who knows how long that will last.
Heres David Haye talking about his first fight in the heavyweights and footage of him training for his heavyweight debut, http://youtube.com/watch?v=t44lVR4_Hx4
