All the talk of Haye and Chisora has made me re-watch some of their more memorable performances. The one that has really stood out was when Haye fought Mormeck; I'd forgotten just how close Haye came to losing. It's very rarely mentioned now, but at times in the fight it really looked like he was a goner. It's worth checking out again.
This was an exciting fight at the time, looked like it could go either way but in truth Haye composed himself in a way that was pretty surprising at that point. Mormeck was also a lot better than the shambles he was in his heavyweight outings. It would give hope to the people that are picking Chisora, on a stylistic basis, but then again Fragomeni would also. The problem is, Mormeck probably punches harder than Chisora despite being a cruiser. Chisora uses the inside of the glove a fair bit.
Good analysis mate, and yes it is a really good fight, probably one of the best there has been for the cruiserweight world title. I remember watching at the time and thinking that Haye was about to lose, but you're right when you note how well he got back into it. Mormeck was a very good cruiserweight champion, and his efforts at heavyweight do not represent his actual ability. The thing the fight shows is that Haye can be vulnerable, and that it doesn't necessarily take someone that big to cause him real problems.
The way Haye got rid of him was very impressive, also the way he dealt with adversity was much to be admired. He went into hostile territory that night and it should be respected. As T said he punches harder then Chisora..
Another thing with Del Boy is I'm sure he's never heard of a straight right down the pipe. Too much wailing with both arms. It's cool but, not the best look against Haye perhaps.
Although getting caught Haye wasn't that hurt, if you watch the video of the KD, and I remember seeing this live at the time, he looks to Booth in the corner and nods that he is fine and looks fairly composed. I thought Haye did a great job and working Mormeck's body and breaking him down so that his hands would drop and he could then go for the head. A great game plan. Mormeck was the man a cruiser at that time.
Both have asked Dillian Whyte to spar and he's turned down both cos there friends with him and he feels awkward. Yep i agree T, TBH i've watched a bit of him since fights been made in depth and there's so much to work with yet so much he's doing wrong. He could be so good but i really dunno what he's being taught. Some on here rate Charles, Personally i think he may be all smoke and mirrors as a trainer. Wasn't impressed with him in Munich inside and outside ring.
Good point actually, it was a very hostile crowd, Mormeck was very popular at the time. All credit to Haye, he showed genuine fighting heart that night, because there is little doubt that he was pretty close to losing at one stage, he turned it round brilliantly. I disagree about the question of power though; Mormeck may have been a big hitter at cruiserweight, but I don't believe he had significantly more power than heavyweight chisora. I think its a mistake for people to rule out the chance of a chisora ko of Haye, chisora can bang a bit, and I think its fair to say that the chin isn't Haye's best feature.
I agree. He in effect took a knee, (after the inital slip), to get himself out of a tight spot and shipping further punishment.
I'm yet to see Chisora's power personally Michael, He's a bigger man but he cuffs with his punches and doesn't throw correctly. The Sexton stoppage was his best IMO and Sexton's not hardest to hurt soon as you apply real pressure he crumbles. Haye's not got greatest chin but it's not as bad as it was at Cruiser IMO. Nearer to time i'm gonna break down Chisora-Haye, Chisora does a lot of things wrong as a pressure fighter which if he did right he'd be turning losses into wins.
He was close to losing for a minute, then took over. It was an excellent performance, especially when you think that Mormeck's style was all wrong for a pot-shotting bomber like Haye. I'm disappointed Haye didn't make more of his body-punching in his style - he's better at that than the straight rights.
