Once again I think Mike Tyson got it spot on.. Haye didnt need the Klitschkos, he could have been making 5m a fight at least taking care of contenders like Chris Arreola in the UK or America

Most people seem to think Haye banked as much as 20m on the weekend, but at the cost of his reputation in the eyes of the world..

British fighters should be taking a leaf out of the Klitschkos and Felix Sturms book - only they could do it better because British fighters generally sell more PPV than German fighters. The Klitschkos are lucky to pick up 2m a fight for run of the mill title defences in Germany (and they have all the belts!) I imagine its the same with Felix Sturm.

British fighters always shoot themselves in the foot by going after the best before they are ready, Hatton could still be defending his titles at the MEN to packed audiences, the victory over Tzsyu would remain his defining fight- only historians would care that he didnt fight Mayweather or Pacman.

Lets be honest, plenty of past champs including true legends of the sport, ducked opponents because they thought the chance of defeat would tarnish their legacy.

But British fighters only seem able to wear their hearts on the sleeve, they want to go toe to toe with the best, anywhere, anytime. But most of them end up coming way short.

I say theres no need to take such risks, boxing is a business. How fighters are managed in Germany proves that even fighting your whole career against garden variety contenders is enough to look good in the history books.

It might be unpalletable to a purist, but what the lad says is true

From a financial point of view, he does make some interesting debating points.

But the fact of the matter is that Haye doesn't fight often enough.

He got £15m ish for this fight which would probably take him 4 fights and 2 years to earn doing it the other way. If he really was/is serious about retiring in October then he needed to cash in whatever chips he had.

He couldn't have gone on without fighting one of Wlad and Vitali, even if he hadn't been talking about it for two or three years.

It is, but it's a **** standpoint to take, from any 'champions' point of view IMO.

I don't know where you're getting this number from. They get at least 3 million Euro from RTL and then have a sold out out football stadium on top of that.

if haye was serious about the october retirement plan then im sure he would have been more than happy to cash in his reputation for a sum of £20 million

I would agree with you there if he hadnt had the fight with Audley. Following that debacle he had to fight one on the brothers.

From a financial pov this fight made sense

He made £4m ish against Audley but that was a uniquely easy fight that could still sell

The wider public weren't going to accept much more of that and he'd have taken 5, 6 or even 7 fights IMO to match what he made from this one

And what's to say he wouldn't have lost along the way - always a real possibility for haye at heavy

    Is this dude serious?

We should get behind legit fighters like Froch, not encourage our fighters to become frauds like Sven Ottke.

It's quite simple, most british fighters (if not all) are not cowards. They believe in their ability (the very best - Haye, Froch, Calzaghe, Hatton, Lewis, Khan etc) believes they can beat anyone just like the best fighters from anywhere.
