Apparently in the dressing room before the fight Haye didn't even have a fast heart beat or increased pulse rate...:yep Get Buncey to confirm this...:good He was cool as ****, knew what he was going to do and just got out there and did it...:yep As someone else said, big money for a pushover job...:deal
Another interesting nugget of information........ Haye took over 2 minutes to get to the ring from Jimmy Lennons intro. Enzo took under 30 seconds from Jimmy Lennons intro.
I think it was Pride Of Wales who said before............... Enzo Calzaghe was down the pub in Newbridge / Cwbrawn and he told all his mates down there Enzo lost the fight - cos in the dressing room before the fight - his ass completely went. Enzo Calzaghe is so mentally strong - he really meant it when he said Enzo was going to destroy Haye in the build up.
Good insight fellas. Anymore info on this is appreciated. I wasn't here for the build up but I've read some of the threads. I discovered Setanta by watching this fight. Didn't Haye walk on stage for the weigh in drinking water after spreading rumours he was struggling to make the weight?
Basically Maccarinelli had won the WBU and WBO Straps. He had spent the last few years from 2003 to 2008 saying he was the best Crusierweight in the World. He wanted Johnny Nelson and James Toney and O Neil Bell and all them big name guys. The local Swansea paper was right behind him - releasing articles in Swansea Evening Post - saying how he is going to be the first man to Unify all World Crusierweight titles since Evander Holyfield. He planned to be the new Prince Of Wales Boxer - once Joe Calzaghe had retired. Anyway - finally he had the chance to unify proper world titles - against David Haye in a Big British Showdown. But - Enzo suffered major mental meltdown and was destroyed. Basically - he was not the best crusierweight in the world - he wasnt what he thought he was.
Plenty of people will tell you with hindsight it was obvious Haye would win. But plenty of experts - Colin Hart for example - all tipped Maccarinelli. It was called the biggest British fight since Eubank and Benn - 15 years previously. But as soon as Enzo galloped to the ring with his hair messed up - it started to seem that maybe things were not so well for Maccarinelli.
Enz was calling out Nelson for a long time. Then Nelson retired. Not saying there is a connection, but the fight was a long time possibility.
That fight was signed I believe. According to Nelson's book he injured himself a couple of weeks beforehand.
atsch Its not like you to make such a schoolboy error GazOC. I'm talking about between 2003 - 2008 - when Maccarinelli was saying he was the best in the world. His originial long target was Nelson - and he wanted him pretty much from 2004 onwards. At that time - Haye was only just a mooted UK rival - cos Haye was up and coming And Enzo was already a World Champion - gunning for Nelson. He also then set his sights on O neil Bell , etc. The Haye fight only reached a real possibily when Haye was Euro Champ in about 2007 and when he won the World titles in 2008 - and the fight was finally made.
