37 is not young by any standards. Don't try to ease your way out of your mistake. Just admit you didn't know what the **** you were talking about and move on.

What an awful fight that would be! I don't want to see Toney go out like that. Might as well make an Evander Holyfield vs. Haye Match as a tune-up.

I don't think there's much point in Haye fighting a HW smaller than himself! (Toney might weigh more, but he's far too small, and fat and old to cope with a young gun like Haye.) Toney won't test Haye's chin and would end up getting hurt (might even make it to the closing bell).

The prospects of Toney getting stopped in this one are very real.... Haye is fast, strong, and sharp. Toney won't have power to hurt Haye.... Sure, Toney could pull off magic, but at this point in his career I don't know.

At thhis time and point, I would have to go with Haye by decision.

Exactly, Toney has a lot to prove against Thompson. It is very uncertain if he can pull it off but if he does Haye-Toney is the most interest fight in the hevyweight division. A real fight fan's fight just like Toney-Jirov.

    That is your opinion.

I nearly watched all of his fights, and I am convinced he is not. My basis is the Rahman II fight where he showed some defensive skills which have been missing since years.

    - It remains to be seen if he has enough left to bet Thompson . I mean Toney is 40 and he is fighting for the first time in his carerr a 6 foot 5 natural heavyweight. So, I am very concerned.

I will have to see how Toney performs against Tony Thompson before I can make up my mind about this. But I think Haye should fight the winner of Toney-Thompson anyways, and why not in an eliminator?

Whatever, here's what I wrote three months ago about Toney-Haye, I think it's still valid:

How would a fight between these two turn out?

Well Hayes biggest assets are his punching power and his speed. Punching power is not effective against Toney, it's difficult to land good clean punches on the defensive master that Toney still is, and even if you do, Toney still got one of the best chins in boxing. Toney hasn't been knocked out or even been on the edge of being knocked out in 80 pro fights - many of these fights against better fighters than Haye, and also against some bigger punchers than Haye.
As for the speed, it's clear that Haye has the edge here over old Toney. I still doubt that the faster Haye could outwork an in shape Toney for 10 or 12 rds tho. Because Haye always had stamina issues, and he will also have them at HW, where he's even heavier and more muscular. He can not stop Toney, so will he be able to go 10 or 12 intensive rds with Toney at a fast pace? I highly doubt it. I just checked on boxrec, how many times did Haye have to fight more than 8 rds? Only 2 times... While Haye might outwork Toney for the first half of the fight, I think he will gas somewhere in the middle rounds - while Toney stays relaxed and will catch up in the middle-late rounds.

Toney is past his best, but he's not shot. He has something left. He proved that in his last fight. If he can get himself in decent shape again, let's say between 220 and 225 lbs (he was 226lbs in his last fight, so it's not impossible), I see Toney countering the **** out of Haye after Haye throws and misses his renowned 'Hayemakers'. Haye has terrible defense, he leaves himself open after throwing his punches, Toney will see it and capitalize on it. Believe me, Toneys precise right hand will find its mark. He will wear Haye down. Haye will be gassed by the 6th or 7th round, and since we all know that he has a shaky chin, it's not even impossible that Toney stops him in the late rds, after punishing him hard.

Let me put it like this, Toney stopping Haye is far more possible than Haye stopping Toney.

If the fat version of Toney from Rahman I shows up, I can see Haye winning a close decision.
If the ok version of Toney from Rahman II shows up, I have Toney winning by UD.
If Toney can lose a couple more pounds and shake off some ring rust, I can even see Toney winning the fight by late TKO.

That's probably true, and he should - no need to continue if he can't beat someone like Tony Thompson anymore. No shittin on Tony Thompson here, he's a good and somewhat underrated fighter, but he's not a champ.

Actually I think Tony Thompson is more dangerous as an opponent for James Toney than David Haye. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that Tony Thompson is a better fighter than David Haye, but styles makes fights - and Hayes aggressive come forward style would play right into Toneys hands, while Thompson is very tall, has reach advantages and fights cautiously and awkward, causing Toney a lot of trouble.

As many other posters already pointed, a Toney vs. Haye clash is pending upon the result of Toney s very next fight against Thompson. Even hardcore Toney supporters acknowledge that Thompson is a very dangerous opponent for Toney, so the outcome of that fight is very uncertain to say the least... That being said, I agree that if Toney gets past Thompson, a Haye fight would make a lot of sense. I however doubt that Toney s handlers will allow this to happen as they would probably aim for a much more lucrative immediate title shot in Germany. Let s wait and see...

That's just pure nonsense, Toney wanted to fight Haye and called him out publicly - but Haye wanted no part of him. Toney even said if the moneys right he'd fight him in London. Haye even (indirectly) admitted he was ducking Toney when he got asked about that fight, saying he respected Toney for his skills but didn't want to fight him because Toneys record at HW sucked (at that moment Haye only had one single win against Bonin at HW!). He also said he would KO Toney if they fought but he didn't want to fight him... (a ridiculous statement considering nobody KOed Toney or came close to doing it in 80 pro fights, and some against harder punchers than Haye)

If anyone can beat Thompson they deserve a title shot... Toney is just not that guy anymore. Toney lost to Peter twice, second time by a huge margin, now imagine for a second what a much faster and more accurate man would have done to Toney in that fight.
    Haye TKO6 Toney
