Haye jumps the gun but not the queue in Klitschko race 23.12.08 - By Ben Carey - David Hayes announcement that he is set to challenge Vitali Klitschko for the WBC heavyweight title next June may have been premature. I was out in Germany to watch Wladimir Klitschko bore everybody to sleep with his jab (in witnessing Wladimirs seventh round stoppage win over Hasim Rahman This content is protected ). We agreed terms for myself and Vitali at a London venue to be decided. The fight is going to happen in June. It's all done and dusted, just need to dot the i's and cross the t's, claimed Haye at the beginning of last week.. Dotting the Is and crossing the ts could be more problematic than Team Haye envisaged. The WBCs mandatory contender, Juan Carlos Gomez, subsequently issued a statement warning Haye to keep your hands off Vitali: hes mine instructing Haye instead to target reigning WBO and IBF champion Wladimir Klitschko before eventually meeting Gomez in a unification clash down the road (assuming both Gomez and Haye are successful in defeating the Klitschkos). To complicate matters further, reports are circulating that WBC president Jose Sulaiman has since confirmed that former WBC champion Oleg Maskaev will be first in line to meet the Klitschko-Gomez winner within 120 days (or 180 in extenuating circumstances) of the fight taking place. Vitali has been ordered to defend against Gomez by April 30 2009, with a potential extension allowed to no later than June 30. Should the WBC honour its rules (by no means a certainty in Boxings murky waters), it seems unlikely that Klitschko would relinquish his WBC title to fight Haye, despite his growing dislike of the Engishman provoked by a picture appearing in a magazine showing a photograph of Haye with the (superimposed) decapitated head of Vitalis brother Wladimir. Vitali owes the WBC a debt of gratitude after it designated him as WBC Champion Emeritus following his initial retirement due to a serious knee injury in December 2005. This bizarre ruling saw Klitschko instated as the WBCs mandatory challenger upon his return to the ring which saw him regain his title by stopping Samuel Peter in his first fight back following a near four year absence in October. Therefore, Haye may have to wait at least 12 months for a crack at the WBC title unless he can persuade both Gomez and Maskaev to step aside so Klitschko can accommodate him first. If not, Team Haye could return their focus towards Wladimir Klitschko, as originally planned. Wladimir has to fit in a mandatory IBF title defence against Alexander Povetkin, previously scheduled for December 13 before Povetkins injury withdrawal, but may be granted until next Autumn to fulfill this obligation which would create an opening in his diary for a possible clash with Haye. Former cruiserweight king Haye has made no secret of the fact that he wants his next fight to be a title shot against either one of the Klitschko brothers. Even in todays mediocre heavyweight division, anyone who earns a title shot on the back of defeating faded veteran Monte Barrett can be considered fortunate. Evander Holyfield, who failed in his quest to become a five-time world heavyweight champion against Nikolai Valuev at the weekend, had six fights at heavyweight before challenging Buster Douglas for the world title in 1990 after truly unifying the cruiserweight division. Holyfields opposition in this two-and-a-half year period included former WBC champion Pinklon Thomas (coming off his loss to Mike Tyson), former WBA champion Mike Dokes (once beaten and on an 11-fight winning streak) and the then undefeated contender Alex Stewart. Hayes desire to breathe new life into a dead division is both refreshing and commendable. However, he must hope that the size of his cheque book rather than the strength of his credentials tips the odds in his favour in the coming days. From the mainpage....................
Gomez deserves his shot and due to Haye's chin, he's got a better chance to pull it off, most definitely. Haye should go after the chinny Klitschko, where he'd have the puncher's chance.
It makes sense all round to just make Vitali-Gomez as soon as possible. That leaves Vitali then free to fight Haye, gives Haye the time to fight someone else in the meantime (still think Dimitrenko would be worthwhile) and the WBC to stay happy with their sanctioning fees. Or yeah, Haye goes after Wladimir instead.
Good, give Haye another test. Someone this time in the top 5, that sounds more sensible than jumping straight from Monte to Vitali...
These days with 3 or 4 champs anyone in the top 5 is almost certainly a champ or number 1 contender for one belt or another with a mandatory lined up. These guys just wont risk fighting a guy like Haye.
The KLIT-Flip is bull****...Haye should get WLAD. We all know ViTKLiT ran an interception at Haye's fight.
Gomez is the tougher opponent for Vitali because of his southpaw style, movement...could be an ugly fight...Vlad would handle him (Gomez) Vitali has to get his chasing legs on and use the jab against this counterpuncher....Haye has a better chance vs Vlad ( because of his speed and power) but Haye would be well served to fight.....Toney,Chagaev,Povetkin, Peter to build up his market value...No one knows him outside of England
Gomez certainly deserves the shot..and he's got a good shot surely but I really have to admit I have no problem skipping him for a showdown with Haye. To me that's a much more entertaining fight and a much more relevant fight for boxing.
Fighting VK without the belt on the line is pointless, the aim is to be heavyweight champ! Vk should fight Gomez early in 2009 then fight Haye in June, I can only assume that was the plan anyway.
you are giving these trinket belts too much meaning. If Haye were to somehow beat Vitali everyone would know he is essentally the #1 or #2 guy in the Heavyweight Division. I have Vitali #1. He was #1 when he left and he came back and got his old belt back with ease against a guy his brother struggled with. These belts mean nothing.
If VK was the legitamate undisputed champ id agree with you, **** the trinket, but he isnt, he is merely a belt holder, he is only worth the risk because he has a belt. No doubt Vitali is the biggest name and challenge there, but in that case Haye may aswel go after a belt and defend againt Vitali rather than just fight him in a non title fight...:think Still I expect the WBC to come up with something to keep Klitschko champion.
I expect Gomez to be given the "Interim" Champion title just like Peter was before he got Maskaev in the Ring.
It's probably for the best, as it means Haye could could get in another fight against a top 10 HW, rather than just jump to Vitali. A good warm-up fight will do him good.
