You don't have any actual counterpoints it seems? Why is it such an outrageous concept that a puncher might be more dangerous to David Haye than a boxer?
No it couldn't. You don't get it, they could not build up a fight with Cunningham because practically nobody knows who he is. Don't get me wrong, I am not criticising Cunningham it is not his fault and he is a worthy opponent and champion. But the fight would have got no hype in the US and no hype in the UK. The Mac fight got more media and public attention in the UK than the Mormeck one, what does that tell you? The domestic clash had people interested here, and because Mac is an Enzo Calzaghe and Warren fighter it added to the hype. Haye beating Cunningham would have done nothing for his reputation going into heavyweight, Mac was a KO artist who was seen as very dangerous, Cunningham would be seen as a good boxer with little threat. Haye made his name for the heavyweights by trash talking and acting like a dick. Not something he has ever done in his career until he stepped up and needed to get noticed in the US. And it worked. Now all US fight fans know who he is and about 90% will pay to watch him fight hoping he gets KTFO. He is in line to get a shot at one of the two Klit brothers next year having only just beaten Barett. Do you honestly think beating Cunningham would have made his impact any greater or got him a shot any earlier? You are implying that he ducked a good challenge, the fact is he was recognised by everyone in the sport as the man at Cruiser. There is zero focus or limelight on Cunningham and Haye has never ducked a challenge or taken an easy route. He took the Mac fight because of the massive British interest and the money, plus I am sure it was nice to shut Warren and the Enzo camp up. It will be interesting to see how Cunningham does but he could do with fighting more often that is for sure, he has fought twice a year for the past 5 years, and will have fought once this year.
Why? Hayes one big weakness is his chin. Mac bangs and has fast hands. Cunningham is not a puncher. I am not saying Macc is better than Cunningham, but if you beat Haye it is probably going to be by stopping him, Mac clearly had the tools to do that, nothing about Cunningham suggests he is going to catch Haye with a shot and KO him.
First off, Haye's chin was not that bad at Cruiserweight. Macc can punch, but not that hard, and most importantly, Macc's chin, while not glass, was not that good. The first thing you need to beat Haye is a chin, which Cunningham has, and Enzo does not. Second, Haye can be outboxed. A lot of his punches are wide and looping, he dropped several rounds to JMM of all people (not the most skilled fighter out there). I find it just as likely that Haye's ultimate weakness at 200 lbs would have been a boxer, not a puncher. Thirdly, USS may be a bigger puncher than Enzo Macc. Macc has the KO ratio on him, but USS has fought vastly better opposition throughout his entire career (bar the Haye blowout of course). It is easier to KO stiffs than live bodies. Lastly, not considering styles, Cunningham is a level above Enzo Macc, full stop.
