Very True, but I think is power will carry to the heavyweights, as he struggled to get down to the cruiserweight limit.
Bad choice of opponent. Being In the top 10 of the WBC doesn't say he's good enough still either, Williams was No 7 too when Vitali battered him. Bonin was no 11 too and he was out In the 2nd minute of the 1st round. He's a former champ but he's shot and had a long spell of Inactivity due to Injuries and politics then lost to Peter, so he might not be so confident either. He's chinny as well. He has a good right hand, but he's eroded while Haye's fast and too fresh to get caught. It's not going to back up the **** talking when he puts the guy out In 2nd round. He might as well went for Peter. Maskaev has had one fight In two years.
It's a good idea to put Haye in with a big hitter. That will force him to work on his defence and get some in-ring practice of avoiding bombs, something he's going to have to improve in order to progress at heavyweight. Maskaev fits the bill: the epitome of the powerful, strong, unrelenting and slow heavyweight that Haye needs to be accustomed to boxing; he's basically the opposite of the opponents that Haye was facing at cruiserweight. If they fight, I expect Haye to win by stoppage or KO when he unleashes a series of combinations, somewhere in the vicinity of round 5 to round 8.
is this a bad choice of opponent in that haye would probably start favourite and the win will be a giant step towards a title fight? i think an opponent of this level was always on the cards. blowing out someone like maskaev in a few rounds will make an impression with some american fans who believe he'll get KO'd against the first semi-decent heavyweight he faces. In fact, if you read some of the american posters on the main forum they think that he should fight someone like minto or mollo in his first fight. so as an introduction to the HW division, and the start of the setanta deal this is a good way to gage how well he'll do in the division and how many fights he needs before getting in with wladdy.
Well fingers crossed because he is the only thing above light middle resembling a great fighter who punches properly and isn't old as ****. Furthermore he is the only guy capable of getting people interested at heavy. Personally I hope he slaps the granny out of Klitschko. I don't dislike Vlad but he's bad for boxing.
I think it's a good first fight for him. People are judging him on his mouthing re a Wlad fight and saying the fight is a joke. Pretend he has never mentioned Wlad. He's the Undisputed CW Champ going for his first fight at HW. Decent start. He'll not be long in ramping the competition up.
i think our american friends will be hoping david gets ktfo - but i cannot see it myself. good point by jeff - why is it that all boxers from middle upwards seem to be old. having long amateur careers cannot explain it fully.....
I guess that the talent pool is smaller these days and there are not enough young, talented fighters coming through who force the older ones to retire.
