People talking about Haye versus the Klitschko's often make sweeping generalizations about the two fighters, forgetting that they're two different guys and have different styles. I wanna breakdown how I see Haye's chances against either guy, coz there are some differences that often get overlooked when people are discussing these fights. Haye vs Wlad Klitschko Wlad is the younger of the two fighters and generally accepted to be the better boxer. Since the losses to Corrie Sanders and Lamon Brewster he has redefined his style, brought in Emmanuel Steward as a trainer, and shown maturity as a boxer. His safety first approach may not get him the dramatic knockouts he had earlier in his career, but much like Lennox Lewis who was also criticized for the same approach, it has put him undisputably top of the Heavyweight division, and looks close to unbeatable. Haye would have quite a hard time with Klitschko jnr, because Wlad does not leave himself open at all, and works behind a massive jab to break guys down. Haye keeps his left hand low, usually to encourage guys to open up and let him squeeze a big right hand counter in. However against Wlad that is dangerous, because Wlad is very athletic, knows how to close the gap, and would be able to get over that low left and onto Haye's chin. Haye loves to try and land that right over the top of a jab, and if it finds home its usually goodnight for whoever is on the recieving end. Its a real fight-ending punch, and I think that Wlad would struggle to recover from being hit flush by a few of those. Unluckily for Haye i think that Wlad is too defensively smart, too athletic, and too strong to end up getting tagged that easily. I also think that Wlad has the ability to trap Haye, because for a big guy he is good with his feet, and that Haye will end up slugging it out in an entertaining 3 round brawl where Wlad's superior strength will be the decisive factor. Could be a great fight, and Haye does have the power to hurt Wlad make no mistake, but I would bet on Wlad to this. Haye vs Vitali Klitschko I think Haye's best chance is against Vitali, rather than Wlad, even though Wlad is often seen as the most delicate of the two brothers. Vitali is a bit more upright, a bit more rigid, and a lot older than Wlad. His jab isn't as quick as Wlad's, and I think because of this Haye will find it easier to land shots on him. I also have doubts in Vitali's legs, and whether or not he can cover the ring fast enough to trap Haye and unload on him. Haye's been very successful against upright eastern european from the former soviet union, amatuer and pro he's never been beaten by one and has generally knocked them out for fun. Drawing them in with the low left, getting them to over-commit with the jab, then using lightning reflexes and power to hit them with the counter. It's a simple formula but it is one that may have some success with Vitali. Of course Vitali could end it at any moment with that power of his, but I also think that Haye has enough speed and power to take out Vitali. This is boxing, and if you get hit with the sort of power Haye has you go down. People betting against Haye on the basis of Vitali's iron chin are being naive. I can see Haye hurting Vitali, he is much ****ing faster than Vitali and I dont think Vitali is the type of fighter who will be able to outbox him. Vitali's best chance comes in a *******, but if Haye fights the right fight he will able to box and move, hitting him with big counters, wearing him down and taking him out late. Any comments? suggestions?
Good synopsis. I agree with the Vitali prediction totally. I think Haye stands a better chance against Wlad than you've given him though. Im not convinced Wlad has improved that much since his losses.
certainly an interesting read. I agree with your vitali prediction, but I'm a bit unsold as to what happens against wlad. I think he certainly stands the better chance against vitali, he's shown he can box to a very concise plan, and I think he'd get away quite easily following a similar game plan to that against Valuev. Wlad definitely gives him more problems than vitali, but having said that, I honestly don't think he's fought anyone as talented as Haye in recent times. Tricky one, and im 50/50 at the mo.
too bad he pulled out of both fights already....hardly worth examining if haye is fighting "john ruiz" and vitali vs ? " and wlad vs chambers and then ?
I'd be very suprised if he didn't fight one of them at the end of the year. There's just too much money involved now for it not to happen. (...and I still believe Pacquaio vs Mayweather will happen within the next six months!)
I think Haye vs. Vitali is a decent winnable fight for David. I think Haye has the speed and power to land decisively and authoritatively on VK; VK is open, notably slower and quite hittable for someone like Haye. conversely, i think can use his mobility and speed to lessen Vitalis volume and cause him to miss a LOT, additionally I think Haye would like to spend a lot of time getting Vk to follow him and expend a lot of energy. I think after round 6 VK would be an easy target for Haye and as good as his chin is, I'm not sure even he could take endless powershots like the ones that rocked Valuev, dropped Barrett and flattened Maccarinelli. Haye's fight with Valuev showed he can stick to a well thought out plan, he can last 12 rounds in a fresh manner and that he's carried his speed and power up to HW. The fact he rocked the gian with his left (weaker) hand, punching off balance, in round 12, and up at that angle shows he has ferocious power in both of his hands. By no means an easy task for Haye; Vitali is big, strong, experienced, has a high workrate and a great chin - but a lot of his attribues can be weakened and even nullified by someone of Haye's ability. Haye can DEFINITELY beat VK, it's within his limits, but he has a hell of a task ahead of him. It will be VK's biggest test in a long time.
Interesting and well written thoughts. I hope we get to see one of these matchups before too much longer.
You know that Vitali has never been outboxed? As I've said before Haye's power is overrated. When a shot 38 year old Barrett can get up from his best punches 5 times how much power does he really have?
Thanks for the compliments and suggestions, I appreciate it. This how I see it too. I think Haye can make Vitali miss, and make him pay for missing too, but its incredibly high-risk. Vitali hits incredibly hard, and staking your chances on taking him out with a single shot is not something that you wanna do against a fighter with a solid chin. Wlad would be much harder, I could just see Wlad being able to get to David easier, and if that happens I think Haye will revert to type, turn it into a war and get knocked out. It'd be great entertainment, but if Haye started getting caught he's throw gameplan out of the window and get wild, and I dont think he will be able to get away with that against Wlad. If he's smart he'll fight Vitali first, get the win, then go on to fight Wladimir. I think this fight has to happen, otherwise the heavyweight division will disappear from view entirely.
It so appears that all the thinking is extremely biased. Vitali by very vicious knockout over Haye. Good reason why Haye ducked out of a fight with Vitali. It will be a mismatch. Vlad by very vicious knock out over Haye. Good reason Haye broke a signed contract with Vlad. Haye knows he will get knocked out by Vitali or Vlad. I have seen all of Klitschko's fights. I know what to expect. Haye is off balance, his no chin, stamina bad. Ran like Hell vs. Valouev. Was given gift by judges. Again, Haye had his chance, yet ran.
A good read!! But my own personal opinion (And I have posted my analysis for David fighting both brothers previously) is this: David has a slim chance against Wlad and no chance against Vitali!! I'm a Brit and a fan of David's and I hope he proves me wrong by beating both Vitali and Wlad but being a fan does not make me impervious to reason and if anyone wants to give me anywhere near even money either brother post me a private message and we'll discuss it further.
Yes, I give Haye less than a 1% chance to beat Vlad and zero chance to beat Vitali, but Haye knows that and it's obvious. It will be a mismatch and a knockout for Klitschkos.
