Can anyone explain to me the story behind this fight. Couldn't find any videos and from the looks of boxrec Thompson was the more experienced guy on his way out. Since the guy was stopped didn't it give you second thoughts about his chin or is he way beyond that TKO loss in the past?
Haye threw a RIDICULOUS amount of power shots. And I mean ridiculous - It was more irresponsible than either of Wlad's 'burn out' losses by a long, long way. He swang and swang and battered Thompson but the old man somehow hung on and Haye had nothing left in the tank in the fifth. A rookie's mistake, really. But in the long run, I'm thankful that Haye was willing to take this sort of fight from the get-go - Better than taking on 30 push-overs before stepping it up like so many do. It didn't say much about his chin (which isn't great, by the way) but then unless he ****s up you're going to have to take monster shots to connect solidly with his chin, and in a division as FULL of china as HW, Haye might not be at much of disadvantage at all.
He got stopped on his feet because he was to tired, he tried to blow thompson out in the first few rounds almost managed it and then gassed as he hadn't trained properly.
Haye did not train very well early in his career and had **** stamina. He was used to going in and KOing guys inside 3 rounds and he was living it up in clubs and partying a lot. He came in and went all out, and battered Thompson for the first 3 rounds and looked like he was going to stop him. He then gassed and as Thompson both hung in there and then started returning fire, Haye wilted. Thompson caught him with some big shots and Haye had nothing in the tank and was stopped on his feet. Thompson always had very good recuperative powers and a big punch, and Haye went in there thinking he could just blow Carl away and he paid the price. His stamina has improved since those early days but it is still questionable IMO.
leif erikson explained it well. haye simply blew his load, throwing the kitchen sink early having a tottering thompson in front of him.
He was naive and thought he could blow Carl Thompson away. He didn't give Carl proper respect, because Thompson has been in so many wars over the years and come back to win, and he should've known that. Haye beat the **** out of Thompson for 3 rounds, but the wily veteran had been in that place many times before and knew how to hang on. he bided his time til haye was knackered and started unloading on Haye. Haye throw so many bombs in the first 2 or 3 rounds that he could barely move his arms in the 5th. Thompson was a murderous puncher and he started to put a beating on David Haye before the fight was stopped. Looking back, its almost certainly the best result of Carl Thompson's career, and he was 41 when he did it! Amazing fighter. Its worth watching its one of the most exciting british fights of the last few years, along with Carl Thompson Chris Eubank and Carl Thompson Sebastian Rothmann.
Haye made Thompson do a chicken dance with almost every punch landed in the first 2 or 3 rounds. Quite a spectacle. It was similar to WALDO v Brewster (though it had more good dancing). I can only assume that the green man had something to do with it.
I think it's been accurately described so far. Some people look at BoxRec and think Thompson was the better man, but he clearly wasn't. Haye had awful stamina at that point. Lazy in training and had more interested in partying than fighting. That fight probably made him the fighte he is though. He's improved his attitude since then. If he had stopped Thompson, he would have slipped up later on against a more dangerous fighter. You could probably describe it as a blessing in disguise.
They did indeed.By that stage Haye could barely stand. Its interesting to note how his developed physically from that fight till now.
