http://www.fightnews.com/Boxing/boxing- ... rch-275314 This is Al's power play to freeze out (eventually) Showtime and HBO. I'm curious how this will affect matchmaking with big named fighters who aren't with Haymon and how fights get made between the opposing forces. Haymon sure does have a lot of fighters though. But are they really going to get paid big money under this kind of limited umbrella? Somehow I doubt it. This is all designed to get NBC ratings (obviously) and make Haymon tons of money to boot. I'm sure he has quite the juicy contract from NBC.
well it is very interesting. He will still use showtime, there is a massive amount of money there, he has over 100 fighters mr Haymon, I heard showtime has a budget for fights around 35 million dollars a year, that is a massive amount of money and I don't see AL walking way from that.
Will he contractually still be able to use Showtime? Maybe then it's just a play to stick it to HBO? I don't really know...I'm just trying to understand his angle in doing this. He surely isn't doing it for the fans or the fighters. I don't believe that for a second.
Haymon bought his dates on NBC. He has to put on decent matches to generated viewership because his only revenue will be from advertisements.
These dates were paid for by Haymon himself don't forget - I am sure he will get some ad revenue but guaranteeing big purses when all the costs are upfront will be a challenge - It would be more likely to see this as a platform to get younger fighters recognized before their move to Showtime (or possibly HBO)
He has like what? a 140 fighters from whose purses he gets a share. The more fights his fighters have, and the bigger the platform they are shown on, the more money Al makes. Of course there are the occasional "investments" like the million dollar purse for Sam Soliman and Sweet Cherry Danny paying Postol step aside money. 140 fighters should in all honesty amount to up to 280 fights(he has low level fighters signed as well, they tend to fight more often). Thats 280 potential purses to get a cut from :hey I always thought that he would move more onto FNF. Oscar Escandon Austin Trout Antonio Tarver Edwin Rodriguez Marcus Browne Gerald Washington Terrell Gausha Dominic Breazeale Sergio Mora Rico Ramos Ahmed Elbiale And additional two pro novices all fought on the same card, they all won and they all signed to Al
Funny how political boxing is. Anyways, ya if we were about to get some nice good big fights with name fighters on NBC this would be awesome, but I expect more 'showcase' fights against no hopers for the haymon squad.
I think he is trying to build his own UFC model... UFC Is banking and their fighters make so little money. Right now he is paying his fighters well, getting them that hefty check. His fighters believe he will make them the next Mayweather.... they are signing some long contracts with him and once he set's his thing up.. He will be another Dana White, with a Boxing League of some sorts.
I'm willing to give this a chance; however, I am skeptical of the types of fights we will receive. I suspect he'll try to come out strong early on with Kid Undercard vs. Danny Jacobs. We'll see how his model plays with an expanded audience. Most of the hardcore fight fans have come to dislike many of the Haymon fighters who were burgeoning in popularity until 2014. I want to see how the issue of these new Haymon clients will be sorted out. Golden Boy, outside of Canelo and Hopkins, don't have many bonafide big draws that aren't affiliated with Haymon. They have a lot of prospects, but they aren't ready for the big time yet. My fear is that being signed to Haymon will be a prerequisite to appearing on NBC. As we saw in 2012 and 2013, you can make good in-house fights for a while, but eventually it winds up backfiring and we have the erosion of fan interest in '14.
The UFC model works because they ultimately have the best talent in the world. They continuously match the best talent against each other. Most of all, a loss in the octagon does not hurt you as bad as a loss in the boxing ring. For some reason a loss in boxing is earth shattering today. It's rare that a guy can go undefeated when continuously fighting the best, unless that person is once in a lifetime talent. The UFC model works because Dana White insist on putting the best fights and when the fans are not happy, it gets addressed.
i'm kinda cheering for this to succeed. boxing could get really huge cause of this. however, i am doubtful. boxing will become popular same way soccer did in usa. due to international influence.
