It's funny. If they billed it as a title fight, people would ***** because Keith Thurman ISN'T the Welterweight champion. So they don't bill it as a title fight, just as a welterweight fight. And people freak out that they don't mention it's a "title" fight. If you're trying to draw fans into the sport again, you don't want to go on and on about "Keith Thurman won the WBA 'interim' title. The WBA has 'interim' champs, 'regular' champs and 'super' champs. And then the WBA removed the 'interim' tag, so now Thurman is the 'regular' champ, but he's not the 'real' champ ... or the 'super' champ ... that's Floyd Mayweather. Keith is really just a top welterweight, nothing more." Why do that? Why bother? Instead, they just billed it as a welterweight fight ... which it was. Again, WHY are people so WORRIED about this effort IGNORING the sanctioning bodies? Boxing has always worked better when there was a ONE IDENTIFIABLE champ and ONE IDENTIFIABLE ratings body. At one time it was the Police Gazette. At another it was the National Boxing Association. At another it was Ring Magazine. When Ring got caught taking bribes, it was the WBC and WBA's turn. Then they screwed up, so the IBF was formed. Then the three of them couldn't agree on sh*t, so the WBO decided to get in. And then the IBO was created. And on and on. Now, some are trying to start over on the national networks WITHOUT bringing all this BELT baggage with them ... and fans are freaking out about it. Who cares? Fighters needed belts because they could make more money with them. If they don't need a belt to make more money, fine. Screw the sanctioning bodies. THEY HAVE DONE NOTHING BUT HURT THE SPORT. Ask anyone what's wrong with boxing. And the answer is: * TOO MANY CHAMPS * TOO MANY DIVISIONS * TOO MANY ORGANIZATIONS * ONCE YOU GET A UNIFIED CHAMP, the ratings body stages a vacant title fight The ratings organizations are to blame for 90% of what's wrong with boxing. They are the reason there are so many champs, and divisions ... all of it. To hell with all of them. They serve no purpose other than to screw everything up and collect sanction fees. That's it. Television gave the WBC, WBA, IBF and WBO their "power" ... because television wanted title fights ... and television can TAKE THEIR POWER AWAY. If the networks don't recognize their authority, and the fighters don't, and everyone is making money and is getting exposure, and down the road start becoming recognizable athletes and making McDonald's commercials ... who the hell needs a WBC or WBA?
They are not dropping the titles not while they have an American heavyweight "champ" on the.books. I welcome it though the ****ter belts should be ignored. WBa regular titles are an embarrassment to the sport and all who watch it.
