This is true. It's like a play. The same twisted roles are always present, but the cast changes from time to time.

 

This is only true if you assume that Al Haymon has any intent on letting any fighters he manage sign 'options' deals with ANY promoter.

Imo, that's a poor assumption at this point.

If Schaefer can get a cut of that stable, while hanging that GBP banner over all those megafights, he did his job.

Some of y'all need to accpet that Al Haymon is killing the ole 'depends-on-my-promoter' model that has dominated boxng for the last 40 years. You don't see hardly any of the up and comers turning their careers over to the Top Rank's of the world anymore. In fact, the 2 biggest under-30 names on Top Rank's roster (JCCJr, Mikey Garcia) have lately been publically balking at those kind of deals.

This notion that somehow every fighter wants to put their primary career guidance in the hands of a promotional company is not supported by what is actually happening in boxing right now.

 

exactly....and schaefer had more than a "cut" of that stable....he had that stable

als fighters werent going anywhere else....contracted to gb or not....mutually exlusive working relationship....all people with an agenda wanna cry "thats not how you run a business.....its bad for business" blah blah......old models are traded in all the time....things progress.....

theres around 70 fighters associated with golden boy....should all 70 guys have multi-year/multi-fight deals??

people wanna cry like oscar is getting bent over.....it was oscars choice....had he let richard continue to run this business successfully like he was....this issue would not exist...

but these guys complaining are fans of the guy who continually gets bent over and does whatever hes told by his master

 

This would carry more weight if people gave a dayum about the fact that the business of boxing has been EXACTLY this way for the last 50 years.

Seriously, you can count on one hand the number of managers that you've seen EVER flex on a promoter in the best interest of his client.

And yet we have folks romanticizing the 'good old days' when boxing was overrun by underworld figures and massive corruption, boxers rountinely were ripped off and died broke or with their brains turned to mush. Come on, bruh.

So Al convinces these fighters that signing these kinds of deals with options aren't in their best interests so Richard can't sign them to long term deals with GBP..........and then Al proposes trades with those fighters to GBP to do just that.

And you don't see a problem with this scenario? Funny how his fighters' best interests align so well with his own, even when it requires a complete change of strategy.

Al's supposed to be working for his fighters' best interests. Schaeffer was supposed to be working for GBP's best interests.

This entire scenario could not happen if both men were true to that.

I know expecting ethics in boxing is like expecting to wake up to a unicorn that shits gold, but has it gotten so bad that people are rooting for their favorite crooked boxing executive like they're figures that deserve it?

 

Depends on whether you a) actually believe this rumor at all and b) can see any legal way it is possible to trade a 'managerial' contract to a promoter. Seems far fetched to me.

Having said that, if he can arrange title shots and big pay for his clients who will remain in the GBP stable under a promotional agreement, he would STILL be doing precisely the job he as a manager gets paid to do.

 

Wow. Schaffer was hired as a CEO to run the business... loyalty or not, do the ****en job and look after the company's best interest. While holding the title and being compensated very well, he should have look after the company.

 

No do your ****ing job and run your ****ing company and not off getting ****ing high!!

Do you think if Steve Job, Bill Gates or Tim Cook behaved like Oscar, do you think they would have investors still investing in their company ?? Hell to the Fock NO!!!

For all the romanticizing that ever happens for boxing--talk like "it's the most pure sport, sport in the truest sense of the word, etc"-- it's still guys hitting each other in the head for a living run by sleazy *******s who exploit our bloodlust for it. Such a cycle can only produce glimpses of success and positivity surrounded by a whole lot of terrible.

The past was probably not measurably better or measurably worse because the sport has always been this way. It is what it is: a cruel, tough, violent way to make a living. That attracts sleaze like moths to a flame. Most of the fighters who become fan favorites lead existences more fitting to terms like "survivor" than champion. It's still dirtier than any fan wants to admit; it always has been.

It doesn't matter who the jackals in power are. The roles are always the same. The leading actors are just re-cast after awhile.
