The hyped fighters were GGG and Loma. The irony is that Usyk/Beterbiev/Kovalev/Pirog were the true great Eastern Europeans. Kovalev wasn't even getting paid for **** sake. No one knows who Usyk is and he's the best Cruiserweight in the history of the sport. Beterbiev has knocked out everybody he's ever fought and totally destroyed an elite fighter in his prime like it was nothing. And Kovalev took the best fighter of the 2010s to the brink and most think he got robbed. Pirog knocked out Danny Jacobs (who I love), but the fix was in. HBO wanted Jacobs to be their next star, but Pirog crashed the party by knocking him out cold. What a gut wrenching tragedy his injury was. GGG fought overmatched opposition his whole career. And Loma was getting title opportunities immediately and ran away, literally ran, in the biggest fight of his career. But these guys had HBO, ESPN and Bob Arum losing their minds. Best since Ali? My ass. But all is not lost. Those who really know and appreciate boxing know how special those 4 fighters are.
True, but that's boxing in general. Hype the guys you think the public will like and match them carefully. Ignore the guys you think the public won't really take to. That's the tough part about being a boxer. You get paid based on your personality vs your abilities.
And how could I forget about Mairis Briedis. Another totally legit EE. Nobody has the slightest clue who this fighter is. Still better than GGG and Loma though.
Pirog? How did HBO screw up with him? By airing his fight with Jacobs and then agreeing to air his fight with Golovkin, until Pirog backed out?
You could line up 100 Matthew Macklin's and knock 'em all down. At some point you've made your point.
I don't see how Kovalev got less support from HBO than Golovkin. It's just that Ward is not as well known as Canelo, the sauce has taken less well. The media started to hyper Golovkin around 2014, when he was already 32 ...
Technically he made successful defenses against Danny Jacobs and Canelo. And he barely beat Jacobs. And neither are these guys are close to Andre Ward.
Hype is simply the opinion of others... FFS... learn to think for yourselves. Crazy that some posters here allow the opinions of others to determine their own.
Okay. (LOL) I seem to recall HBO giving exposure to a lot of Eastern European fighters, including Wlad, Vitali, Povetkin, Valuev, Maskev, Golota, Chagaev, Ibragimov, Kovalev, Usyk, Adamek, Golovkin, Pirog, Provodnikov, Tszyu, Karmazin, Lomachenko ... and on and on and on.
“This EE, that EE” is a lazy and bigoted way of thinking. They invested in the fighters they believed in regardless of the ethnicity. Pirog got injured, It wasn’t anyone’s fault. Usyk did get backing from HBO as soon as he proved himself against Glowacki. Lomachenko, aside from being one of the most accomplished amateurs of all times, proved himself legit in the pros against one of the most talented up coming fighters in his 3rd pro bout. Both Golovkin and Kovalev had similar difficulties early in their careers, both struggled to get fellow contenders in the ring with them, both crushed overmatched opponents, both stepped up and lost their O’s against the best when the decks were stacked against them. The difference is, GGG adjusted and gave one of the best fights, Kovalev folded. And both Golovkin and Lomachenko are far superior p4p fighters to Briedis, whom the OP had probably never heard of until the fight against Usyk.
