This is exactly the trouble with HBO. They keep picking out fighters to 'highlight' and then end up having caught themselves in their own zippers when that fighter gets beaten, or fails to live up to their own hype. They need to stop behaving like promoters and 'selecting' fighters to be displayed to the world and, instead, try to cover the sport more neutrally and let the talent emerge on its own. If they just put the fighters on display, fan favourites and champions will naturally emerge, instead of them trying to force the issue.
Couldn't agree more. HBO needs to stop acting like a foolish kingmaker and more like a cable giant with the big war chest that is not beholden to an adviser who is actually an unlicensed manager of fighters.
you are point is valid but i think hbo have to recognise the people who are going to bring them the most viewers and sponsors. they shoot themselves in the foot if they pay money to someone on that is'nt going to get them viewers. Amir Khan has an established following in the UK and he's heavily connected with Skysports, hbo get someone that brings them domestic viewers in the US and international recognition from other channels that cover Khan. Win win for both parties.:rasta
This is exactly what needs to happen. But it wont happen cuase boxing is not accessible enough to the casual fan. And if it was it would end up sucking for other reasons. You would have to canibalize all the long history of skillsets to make every match a slug fest from beginning to end and only compensate boxer/promoters accordingly. Most people dont have a huge attention span when it comes to boxing. So either leave it like it is and try to tweak a few things for minor growth or turn it into the WWE. Its a cultural thing and cultures do change in time. This is the point were at now.
