According to, they had a change of heart and will definitely produce a countdown special.

I'm just curious what reason did they have for not doing one in the first place. :huh It can't be the language barrier, or "dull personalities" because they did one for Barrera vs. Marquez. I was thinking it was a financial issue after having De La Hoya, Hopkins, Calzaghe, and Cotto all fight on regular HBO, with no ppv revenue to fall back on. But then I found out, it's the promoters who cover the cost of these specials (for around $125K). Very strange. Dah well...at least this fight will get the attention (or at least a fraction) it deserves now.

Cotto vs Margarito deserves so much more hype than any fight happening this year

Expecially a Mayweather/De La Hoya bout

maybe ESPN is not the best source as to what HBO will or won't do (was it ESPN who said they wouldn't do the countdown?)

I am quite certain they will do one for Cotto vs. Margo. They are trying to build Cotto into a star.

If they did one for Zab vs. Cotto.....

Maxboxing also reported it. ESPN (Dan Rafael) and Steve Kim (Maxboxing) both get their information directly from Bob Arum and HBO.

Good news and glad they came to their senses. This one is a no-brainer. You want people to be drawn to the best in the sport. ESPECIALLY if they are action minded fighters.

Um... they haven't come to to their senses... this fight shouldn't be a PPV at all... it will do low numbers with our without a countdown show while it would do just great ratings on regular HBO... simply because it's really a hardcore fan's PPV, and even if Cotto wins, winning a hardcore fans' PPV show (180-250.000 buys at most) won't do him good for the AVERAGE sport fans to demand Mayweather-Cotto since they won't buy it... good decision for Arum to make a few dollars in a short time but bad in long term...
